Chips are items that can be obtained and equipped in Mega Man X8. They are similar to the equippable Parts from the earlier Mega Man X games. Contrary to past games, some of these Chips are developed from Rare Metals which are found in the stages. After leaving the stage and heading to Hunter Base's R&D Lab, they can be bought as parts.

Notes
In order to play as any Navigator, the player must start a new game plus (created upon finishing the game) and finish the intro stage before the navigator can be bought (assuming the previous game was cleared in Normal or Hard Mode). Furthermore, only one of three is immediately available for purchase, depending on which navigator was used the most times in the previous game. The other two will become available when used enough times. The need for completing the game first can also be bypassed by using a secret code at the title screen allowing the navigator connected to that code to be ready for purchase.
