As his name suggests, Double has two forms: the first is a stocky, overweight, amicable form, but his second and true form is a taller, slimmer, and stronger battle-ready [[Reploid]], with each hand equipped with energy sabers and strangely a gelatinous substance makes up about 50 percent of his body. Double's name also perfectly fits his role in the story as a double-agent and his possible split personality. His overall character is also shown to be significantly insane upon revealing his true allegiance, breaking out into maniacal laughter, frequently shouting phrases that involve destruction of some sort when attacking X, and has little, if any, remorse for his actions, and in fact mocks X for his trusting nature, stating that it would be his fatal weakness. He also implies that he might also consider betraying Sigma in the future, as he states that among the groups he declares idiots as they made his job easier, Mavericks were included in it.

Double (ダブル Daburu) is a supporting character, as well as a secret secondary antagonist for X, in Mega Man X4. At first appearing to be a simple rookie Maverick Hunter, it is later revealed that he was a spy working for Sigma all along.

Characteristics

Appearance

In his first form, Double is a short and tubby Reploid. His face is pudgy and his body shape is almost entirely spherical, giving him an unintimidating and goofy appearance. His armor is yellow and brown, and his helmet has a mouth guard that somewhat resembles that of an American football helmet. He possesses a belt around his waist with several red capsules attached.

However, his true form is much more menacing. His body expands, making him much more tall and lean, and revealing most of his armor is translucent and full of what appears to be a pink fluid or gel. His feet, shoulders, and helmet gain large spikes and horns. His eyes also become red with green outlines, and his face turns into a slender sneer. His arms also possess generators that can create purple beam knives.

Personality

Double is initially presented as a incompetent and clumsy member of the Maverick Hunters with an earnest personality, who is eager to serve as X's aide, showing concern for him and advising him. However, this is a ruse he puts on as a double agent working for Sigma, and his true nature is that of a sadistic and violent Maverick. Upon revealing his true form, he mercilessly slaughters the Maverick Hunters who were ridiculing him before going after X, where he reveals he thinks the Mavericks, the Hunters, and Repliforce alike are fools who made his job too easy, and looks forward to ripping X apart. Despite his insane personality, Double has enough discipline and cunning to fool the Maverick Hunters with his bumbling personality before he is called on by Sigma.

History

Mega Man X4

Double first appears to assist X as his operator, after the Sky Lagoon incident and the beginning of Repliforce's coup d'etat. He introduces himself as a rookie and X finds him endearing. He can normally be seen waiting on the Stage Select Screen in X's story.

After X begins infiltrating the Final Weapon, Double is made fun of by some Maverick Hunters in the 17th Unit at a hangar base. Sigma contacts Double and finally gives the order to let loose on the Hunters, reasoning it would be bad for their plans if the Hunters went to space to reinforce X.[1] Double gleefully transforms and slaughters the bullies, before assuring X over communication that everything is normal. He then travels to the Final Weapon, where he confronts X in his fake form again before transforming for battle. X is forced to defeat Double. X is emotionally shaken by this betrayal of his trust, and Double explodes after indignantly challenging X to meet him in the afterlife.

Strategy

Double's body is made of a fluid metal that allows him to change his shape alongside his different personalities: a young, chubby Reploid and a tall, malicious Maverick.[2] He battles X in his true Maverick form, wielding fearsome agility and beam knives. His dash attacks are easily avoided by staying on the walls, but this makes him change strategies and attack with his energy discs instead. He also takes no damage from X-Buster shots less than a fully-charged Charge Shot.

Double's weakness is, ironically, the Double Cyclone. However, hitting him with Double Cyclone breaks blobs off his body that become attack drones. Unlike most bosses in the Mega Man franchise, using Double's weakness actually makes the battle more difficult, as the arena can become clustered by drones unless the player hits him sparingly.

Double leaps to the ceiling before descending on the player with a beam knife. Upon landing, he dashes horizontally or diagonally towards them with his beam knife again. Double cries "Evil Slash!" (or "Devil Slash!" in Japanese) when using this move.

MMX4 Double LightProjectile Light Shot (光弾 Hikari-dan)[3]
Double throws a spinning energy disc at the player. After losing half his health, he throws two discs at a time.

MMX4 Double WaveProjectile Wave Shot (ウエーブ弾 Uēbu-dan)[3]
Double floats on one side of the arena to release two wide energy waves, which the first has to be dashed under while the second has to be jumped over. He only uses this attack when half his health is depleted, and this attack is always preceded by a Tackle.

When struck with his weakness, Double Cyclone, Double releases two blobs that become attack drones. They may become spinning blades that bounce around the arena, or they may become a Bat Type (コウモリ型 Kōmori-gata) which floats above the player to fire shots downwards.

Double appeared in the Rockman X4 manga. Like the game, he is a spy sent by Sigma to keep an eye on the Maverick Hunters and pretends to be a fan of X. He also interacted with Zero a few times. In the manga, Double was directly responsible for framing Repliforce for the attack on the city by the rampaging Mechaniloid Eregion by placing Repliforce equipment at the scene, next to Eregion's corpse after his defeat.
