Not to be confused with the Maverick whose English name is Vile.
"The desire for power. The joy of making everything work for you. You have no way of experiencing this without a human brain. It's the ultimate joy! No mere Reploid could ever understand! "
―Dr. Weil, Mega Man Zero 3

Dr. Weil, known as Dr. Vile (Dr. バイル Dokutā Bairu) in Japan, and addressed by his subjects as Lord Weil, is the main antagonist of the Mega Man Zero series. He is a brilliant but cruel scientist who seeks total dominion over humans and Reploids alike. While he does not appear in-person until Mega Man Zero 3, his schemes during the Elf Wars had repercussions that lasted for the entire era.

Dr. Weil's evil influence lingers in the Mega Man ZX series as the Biometal Model W, which fuels the major conflicts of the series.

Appearance[]

Similar to the first ever Mega Man villain, Dr. Wily, Dr. Weil is an elderly man with wrinkled skin and long grey hair. He has a pointed nose, a long beard, and deep red eyes. He wears a cyborg suit of armor that resembles a robe with a breastplate, a high collar, and a conical helmet of orange glass. His legs are not visible, if he has any; instead, below his chest are an array of black and red arrow-shaped bands that form a long robe. Within his helmet is a fluid that Weil is constantly submerged in, making his hair flow upwards.

When Dr. Weil was wounded by Craft's attack on Neo Arcadia, his helmet was shattered, letting his hair fall down around his head. Half of his face was also damaged, revealing part of his metallic endoskeleton around his left eye and mouth. He seemingly healed these injuries when he fused with the Ragnarok core, and later with Ragnarok itself.

Personality[]

"...Though my body appears thus... I am still human...!"
—Dr. Weil, Mega Man Zero 4

Dr. Weil normally displays a clever and collected nature. What he lacks in direct power he makes up for with intelligence. He is skilled at stepping back to work behind the scenes, secretly achieving his true goals while leaving others none the wiser. He is a masterful manipulator and always has backup plans. Oddly, he uses colloquialisms befitting a youthful individual (such as referring to Zero as a "fun guy"), implying that his punishment occurred while he was still young and that he was a prodigy similar to Ciel.

Under Weil's professional façade is one of the most psychotic and selfish individuals in the Mega Man franchise. What he truly seeks is control: Weil is obsessed with the sensation of controlling others, as he loved commandeering all Reploids with the Dark Elf, and eagerly attacked Area Zero to force the humans back under his rule. He is incredibly sadistic and ruthless, as he enjoyed causing the Elf Wars and admitted to Neige that his subjects' humiliation and rage pleased him. He recognizes his evil and revels in it, boasting to Zero that he is "an endless nightmare." In the radio drama, he also claimed that he felt a world filled with endless suffering was the kind of world best suited for both humans and Reploids and that creating such outweighed even his desires for revenge against them.

Despite his manipulative prowess, Weil's most significant weakness is his knack to underestimate enemies, especially Zero. He believes that Zero has no chance of defeating Omega, but is proven otherwise. After Zero kills Craft on Ragnarok, Weil fires a "warning shot" to indicate that Ragnarok was still operational, which alerted the Resistance and gave Zero a chance to stop him. This shot was likely a challenge, one that cost him victory.

Weil hates Reploids and sees them as tools at best, going as far as to cause the Elf Wars to get his way over them. Much of his hatred stems from the Maverick Wars, in which he lost all touch with ideals such as freedom and justice, calling them worthless. He does not believe Reploids can even understand emotions and pain on the same level as humans, boasting about the pain he experiences during the final battle on Ragnarok and claiming Zero would never understand it, thus cementing him as something of a "human supremacist". He believes that Reploids are destined to serve under humanity's heel - the only Reploid he seemed to respect was Omega, revering him as the God of Destruction. Despite his preference for humanity, he loved torturing humans just as much as Reploids. Because of his regenerative armor, he held little regard for his human body, even believing he could survive the crash of Ragnarok and planning to do so to get a front-row seat of Area Zero's demise. Even when firmly defeated, he remained defiant, declaring that Zero shall perish and burn in the fires of hell as his last words.

History[]

Background[]

During the Maverick Wars, Dr. Weil worked with the research on Zero's dormant body. He was a rival coworker to an ancestor of Ciel; the two had differing views on how the Maverick Wars should be resolved. Weil specialized in Reploid resurrection and weapons development to destroy Mavericks, believing Zero's body would make for the perfect weapon: Omega. Meanwhile, Ciel's ancestor analyzed Zero's cognitive program for anti-bodies to cure the Sigma Virus in Mavericks.

Ciel's ancestor finally developed the Mother Elf, which X used to neutralize the Sigma Virus and end the Maverick Wars. Weil was dissatisfied with the result, believing Reploids should submit to humanity and pay for the carnage of the wars. However, he saw the potential of the Mother Elf's power over Reploid minds. Thus, he proposed Project Elpizo, a plan to combine the Mother Elf with a single Reploid (Omega) to exert control over all other Reploids so they would never harm humans again. X rejected Project Elpizo, as it went against his dream of coexistence. As humans were fearful of another lengthy war, however, many favored the project.[1]

The Elf Wars[]

To further his agenda, Dr. Weil secretly took control of the Mother Elf, transforming her into the Dark Elf. He also produced clones of her called Baby Elves, who took control of Reploids and forced them to fight each other across the globe.[2] This period became known as the Elf Wars.

The conflict spread global devastation, resulting in increased support for Project Elpizo. Dr. Weil was allowed to prepare Zero's body, finally hijacking him into Omega. However, X and Zero (whose mind was put into a copy body) recaptured the Dark Elf and turned the war in their favor. With the Elf Wars closing and his plans awry, Dr. Weil unleashed Omega as a conqueror to take advantage of the world's weakened state.[3][4] X and Zero fought and defeated Omega, leading to Weil being brought to justice and his role in the Elf Wars being revealed.

The Eight Gentle Judges delivered their verdict: Weil was cursed with a painful regenerative suit and banished into the wastes he helped created, and his memories were converted into data so he would never forget his crimes.[5] Meanwhile, Omega was exiled into orbit in the Forbidden Ark. Feeling betrayed by the humans he sought to empower, Dr. Weil began plotting revenge on the humans and Reploids alike.

Mega Man Zero 2[]

Dr. Weil is first mentioned by X after Elpizo's defeat, reminding Zero of the man who cursed the Mother Elf into the Dark Elf. After the credits roll, Weil is then heard speaking to Omega about his plan to take over the world now that the Dark Elf is free.

Mega Man Zero 3[]

MMZ3 Scene 06

Dr. Weil with Omega.

Dr. Weil returns from his exile and causes Omega to return from orbit, meeting Zero and the Guardians in the ruins of Omega's Forbidden Ark.[6] He breaks up the fight and introduces Copy X MK. II, whom he resurrected. Before departing, he hints at Zero's replacement body by remarking interest in how Zero performs "in that body of his."

Dr. Weil claims to have repented of his sins, and Copy X allows him into Neo Arcadia. When Copy X retakes rule of Neo Arcadia from Sage Harpuia, Weil is appointed the new leader of the Neo Arcadian Army in place of the Guardians. However, he secretly gives the Eight Gentle Judges "upgrades" that brainwash them into his own Weil Numbers.

Dr. Weil leads the search for the Dark Elf and Crea and Prea; the latter two, he personally retrieves while Deathtanz Mantisk keeps Zero busy. When the Dark Elf is located at the human settlement Area Z-3079, Weil and Copy X launch Omega in a missile to retrieve her. The plan is successful with many casualties, and with the upper hand, Weil gets Copy X to barter with Ciel for the Ciel System. However, Ciel refuses due to the destruction of the settlement, causing Weil to resurrect Anubis Necromancess V, Blizzack Staggroff R, and Hanumachine R for an assault against the Resistance.

When Zero faces Copy X in Neo Arcadia, Dr. Weil betrays Copy X with a trap in his body that detonates when he attempts to access his final form.[7] With Copy X dead, Dr. Weil publicly announces the death of Copy X to all of Neo Arcadia, putting the blame onto Zero, and invokes Ordinance #8 to become leader of Neo Arcadia by unanimous vote. He then uses Neo Arcadia's resources as he sees fit to enact his plans. Finally, he completes Project Elpizo by combining Omega and the Dark Elf, granting them control over all Reploids.

Z3 scene 13

Dr. Weil with the Dark Elf-infused Omega.

When Zero infiltrates Weil's Research Laboratory, Weil sends the Baby Elves to fight Zero one last time, just wanting to hear them squeal. After Zero defeats the revived Weil Numbers (and optionally Hidden Phantom within Cyberworld), Weil reveals he is actually human and rants about how much fun it is to make all Reploids work for him. When Zero declares he is just a Maverick who must be disposed of, Weil is amused by his rebuttal and sends Omega to kill the hero.

Zero defeats two of Omega's forms. Watching from afar, Dr. Weil proudly reveals that Zero's current body is a replica, and that Omega's true form is the real Zero's body. Zero perseveres and defeats Omega in their final battle, but the Messiah is reinvigorated by the Dark Elf for another round. Suddenly, Weil's curse on the Dark Elf starts to fade, and Weil expresses shock when the real X arrives to inspire Zero that his heart is still real. Zero gains the confidence to finally kill Omega once and for all, much to Weil's horror.

Even though Zero destroys Omega at the end of the game, Dr. Weil remains the ruler of Neo Arcadia.

Mega Man Zero 4[]

Dr. Weil appoints a new head of the Neo Arcadian military, Craft, and begins an oppressive totalitarian rule that labels all who disagree with Weil as Mavericks. Humans and Reploids become equally oppressed, and Weil's reign grows so unbearable that humans begin fleeing the city-state. One major Caravan heads to Area Zero, the crash site of the Eurasia space colony where nature has started to revive.[8] Seeing the threat of Area Zero, Dr. Weil devises Operation Ragnarok to obliterate it, forcing humans to stay in Neo Arcadia. The Einherjar Eight Warriors distract the Resistance with attempts to destroy the ecology in Area Zero, while Neo Arcadia completes the Ragnarok energy cannon satellite.

After half of the Einherjar Eight Warriors are vanquished, Weil has Craft directly attack the settlement at Area Zero and capture their leader, Neige. Weil visits Neige's prison cell to taunt her, and is present when Zero breaks her out. He commends Zero for wiping out half of the Einherjar, but nonetheless expresses confidence that Zero can't stop Ragnarok, before offering Neige the ultimatum of survival in Neo Arcadia or death in Area Zero. Neige defies Weil with a flash bomb while Zero escapes with her through the floor. Weil dismisses their escape and has Craft continue Ragnarok.

Unbeknownst to Dr. Weil, Craft takes Neige's final defiance to heart. After Ragnarok is completed, Weil contacts Ciel to taunt the Resistance. His victory is short-lived as Craft rebels against him, firing Ragnarok at Dr. Weil himself, destroying Neo Arcadia and killing millions of civilians.

Weil after Craft's attack on Neo Arcadia.

Shockingly, Dr. Weil survives (with significant damage) and teleports to Ragnarok, setting the weapon on a collision course with Earth in a final attempt to destroy Area Zero. Upon confronting Zero, he attributes his survival to his regenerative armor, and explains to Zero how the humans modified his body before his exile. Weil boasts that he heals all wounds and has stopped aging, becoming virtually immortal. He rants that freedom and justice are meaningless ideals, before merging with Ragnarok's core to form a suit of armor in an attempt to ensure Zero cannot stop the crash. In the radio drama, Zero also demands to know if revenge against humans for the events between the Elf Wars and his exile were his motivation for instigating Operation Ragnarok, only for Weil to reveal that it was actually so he could create a world best suited for humanity and Reploids.[9] Zero defeats this form, the explosion destroying the entire chamber.

However, Weil still returns, fusing himself with Ragnarok's hull and taunting Zero if he will risk becoming Maverick by killing a human. Zero, citing he never viewed himself to be a hero anyway, battles Weil again as the satellite enters Earth's atmosphere. Weil is destroyed when Zero detonates the core, presumably sacrificing himself in the process. As Ragnarok is destroyed, Weil expresses disbelief that he could be defeated by a "mere puppet" before damning Zero to perish and burn forever.

Mega Man ZX series[]

Main article: Model W
Model W

A fragment of Model W.

Though Dr. Weil perished on Ragnarok, his evil influence lives on through Biometal Model W (Model V in Japan) in the Mega Man ZX series. After fusing with the Ragnarok core, Dr. Weil's malice was infused into Ragnarok itself. Once Albert discovered this, he used Ragnarok's debris to create Model W, the first ever Biometal which he planned to use to destroy and reset the world. However, Model W required vast negative energies to use its full power, so Albert planned the Game of Destiny to create Mega Men such as Serpent to feed Model W. The Biometal influenced Serpent into evil, and it is speculated that it even influenced Albert into harnessing it in the first place.[10]

In Mega Man ZX Advent, Albert finally achieves his goal and awakens Model W to form Ouroboros. However, he was destroyed along with Ouroboros by Grey/Ashe, causing Model W to crumble into the sea. This is assumed to be the end of Model W, and thus Weil's hateful soul.

Forms and abilities[]

WeilOCWalt

Prior to becoming a cyborg, Weil was a simple human being with all the physical limitations and frailties of the humankind. Arguably his greatest attribute was his immense intellect. His specialty as a scientist revolved around weapons development and Reploid DNA-revival, meaning he could resuscitate dead Reploids, as shown with the revivals of Copy X, Necromancess, Blizzack Staggroffe, and Hanumachine. He was also capable of creating new consciences for Reploids and enhancing their battle capabilities, as evidenced by his creation of Omega inside Zero's original body. He also displayed high-level planning and manipulative skills, as shown by him triggering the Elf Wars, his removal of Copy X Mk. II while blaming it on Zero and the Resistance in order to become the leader of Neo Arcadia, and by stalling the Resistance until the completion of Ragnarok, among other things. His programming skills for Reploids are extensive enough to not only work with Zero's original body, but also fully release its full destructive potential as Omega.

Cyborg form[]

As part of his conversion into a cyborg, Weil's body gained powerful regenerative capabilities, to the point where he could survive a direct hit from the Ragnarok cannon, which destroyed a large portion of Neo Arcadia (which caused 20 million casualties), also halting age altogether. The armor also kept him alive during his 100 year exile. He also implies to Zero that he was fully aware of his regenerative abilities at least since prior to Craft's using Ragnarok on Neo Arcadia, and possibly as early as when he was exiled. Weil was confident that he could survive the fall of Ragnarok, including atmosphere re-entry and the impact with Area Zero, to the point that he declared twice that he is incapable of dying. With this mechanical body, Weil had levitation abilities, which he used as his primary means of locomotion. Due to his mechanical body, he was also capable of fusing himself with machinery to gain combat capabilities, doing this on two occasions in his fight against Zero. It is also heavily implied that the immortality that he gained from being turned into a cyborg is the reason why he ultimately managed to survive as Biometal Model W.

Core Fusion[]

By fusing with the Ragnarok Core, Weil gains a large battle armor and a vast arsenal of abilities. As a possible extension of his scientific capabilities of reviving Reploids, he can summon the Weil Numbers to aid him in fighting Zero. He was also able to summon Death Swords to act as lightning rods to trap his enemies, fire crystal-like projectiles and energy projectiles, and other abilities.

Weil can create long transit frames between his teleport frequency, make him even harder to hit. Sometimes, Weil can disappear and return with other three illusions of him, only the real one will eventually become solid, and cannot be stopped.

Attack Description Notes
Death Pierce Weil summons six swords that plant themselves into the floor. He then charges a purple energy ball, which fires off lightning at those swords that sends electric balls moving across the floor. The swords can be destroyed with the sword, and all at once using Ice Blade. The swords can also be picked up and used as weapons with the Zero Knuckle technique. Attacking Weil with them will cause him significant damage.
Meteor Illusion Weil summons two waves of meteors at the top of the screen, first with grey, second with three grey and three gold meteors in specific patterns. The grey meteors always hit the ground in specific points, while the gold ones home in on Zero.
Acid Rain Weil summons eight blue purple balls that he spreads into the whole floor, then teleports to the other side and repeats. With an Ice Javelin buster shot the orbs can be frozen in place which will make them drop to the ground.
Energy Recovery Weil summons four green destructible blobs onto the field. If they aren't destroyed, each will heal Weil about 10 health points.
Enemy Inferno Weil summons a floating multi-colored ball and summon four of the eight Weil Numbers to attack. There are two versions of this attack:
EX Skill: Enemy Inferno Neo Same as Enemy Inferno, but Weil will summon all eight Weil Numbers.
EX Skill: Death Prism Weil summons a hexagonal-shaped crystal block with pointed edges and splits it into three smaller homing prisms.

Ragnarok Form[]

After his first defeat and the resulting partial destruction of Ragnarok, Weil fused with what remained of the space station, becoming a colossal monstrosity, who was capable of using several energy based attacks, such as a particle beam and energy projectiles, ensnaring foes with energy webs, and firing spikes as well. He can even summon mechaniloids via green portals, presumably an extension of his Reploid revival abilities. The process of transforming into this form was also extremely painful for Dr. Weil.[11] At this point, Weil's only weakness is his head, protected by a layer similar to the tube in his head, a very small target altogether. Another thing to point out is that during the battle, Zero must defeat Dr. Weil in 120 seconds (2 minutes) or less or else Zero automatically loses a life.

(Note: Attack names are not official)

Attack Description Notes
Net Capture Weil fires off multiple web-shaped traps that immobilize the player upon contact. Once captured, Weil uses either Abyss Nova or summon Bonsects. The nets can be destroyed.
Abyss Nova Weil lowers the horn shield to charge up energy and fire a straight laser blast that rakes from the top to near floor. Once on ground level, Dr. Weil will fire another laser that moves up the screen. A well-timed dash will avoid the laser going down, but Zero will have to grab Weil's upper horn to completely avoid the next laser. Another variation only fires one shot if the player is caught in a web-trap.
Bonsect Summon Two Bonsects appear from two different green portals. They can be destroyed or disarmed by the Zero Knuckle.
Acid Barrage Weil shoots a small orb towards the top horn that fires off like Acid Rain, but there is only one wave with five blobs.
Crimson Orbs Weil lowers the horn shield, and fires off three red energy balls in a pattern that each splits into three smaller ones upon destruction.
Thorn Pressure Weil lowers the horn shield, grows extra spikes on it and fires it off as a projectile that returns to Weil after a few seconds.
EX Skill: Cross Split Weil shoots a spherical object that continuously releases spike projectiles alternating in a plus (+) or cross (x) manner.

Theme music[]

In Mega Man Zero 3, Dr. Weil's theme was "Curse of Vile". It was a foreboding theme that was somewhat mechanical in nature. An arrangement titled "Curse of Vile -Stage Version-" was the music of the game's final stage, Weil's laboratory.

Mega Man Zero 4 gave Weil a different theme, called "Fate - Theme of Vile -". This far more powerful piece featured pipe organs and cymbals, highlighting the extreme evil and madness of Dr. Weil. The GBA version omits the cymbals element, although it was restored with the Legacy Collection version. This theme was later remixed as "Fate - deep-seated grudge", the boss encounter theme of Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent. However, the main melody is prominent only in "Fate - deep-seated grudge - Rockman Model V -", a variation that plays when the Model W Core is awakened by Vent/Aile's hatred. Babel Tower, the theme that played when Serpent was defeated, also contained some bars from "Fate - Theme of Vile -".

In Mega Man Zero 4, Weil's final boss theme is officially named "Falling Down".

Zeroxmas3dw3

Dr. Weil in the manga.

Dr. Weil made his debut in volume 3 of the manga. He is an aged scientist that prolongs his life with chemicals in his body. Weil is looking for the Dark Elf, and orders Omega and Craft to help him, as well as creating a duplicate of Zero known as Roze. However, both Omega and Roze were defeated, and Craft joined Zero.

In the last chapter, Weil uses Mega Vile (メガバイル Mega Bairu, "Mega Weil") to fight against Zero, a giant mech that has durable armor and can fire powerful lasers. During Christmas, Weil emerged from the ground and destroyed Lito's house, apparently killing Lito (it's later shown he wasn't inside). Zero is enraged with the death of his friend and fights Weil with the help of Craft, Neige and the villagers. In the end, Zero manages to get above Mega Vile and uses his Zero Knuckle on the cockpit while falling, breaking the cockpit and the glass encasing Weil's head, making the chemicals spill out. After the attack, Weil's mecha falls into a pit he created, apparently killing him.

Etymology[]

  • Vile, his Japanese name, is an adjective for something that is morally repugnant.
  • His English name, Weil, is a south German name that is derived from the Latin world villa (country house).

Trivia[]

ArigaWeil

Artwork of Dr. Weil by Hitoshi Ariga made in honor of Chikao Ōtsuka after his death, quoting "理想だと!?戯言だ!! (Ideals, you say? What rubbish!)", Weil's prominent voice line before his first battle in Mega Man Zero 4.

  • An artwork of Dr. Weil by Mega Man Megamix creator Hitoshi Ariga was uploaded onto his Twitter account to pay Chikao Ōtsuka (Dr. Weil's voice actor) tribute shortly after he had passed away.[12]
  • Weil is one of the three bosses in the X/Zero series that summons holograms of the previous games' mavericks during boss fight, the other ones being Phoenix Magnion and Metal Shark Player.
  • With Zero's fate unclear, Dr. Weil is the last confirmed death in the Mega Man Zero series.
  • Dr. Weil is the only human character in the Mega Man franchise (except for Super Adventure Rockman) to die on screen. However, this is disputable, as Weil was a mechanical cyborg to a large extent at the time of his death.
  • Being over 100 years old, Dr. Weil is the second oldest human of the series, the oldest being The Master who was over 3000 years old.
  • As seen in the gallery above, three different designs - young, middle-aged, and elder - were proposed for Dr. Weil's character. The final design of Weil was based on the latter character concept. Weil's middle-aged concept was later reused for a character in Mega Man ZX Advent who will allow the character to teleport to the Trinity Building.
  • Although he has no official connection to Dr. Wily (as clarified by Keiji Inafune[13]), the two doctors have other similarities besides the structure of their names. Both continued to menace the world long after the demise of their mortal bodies (Dr. Wily in the Mega Man X series with the Maverick Virus, and Dr. Weil in the Mega Man ZX series with Model W).
    • To add to their similarities, the earliest known ancestor of Albert Einstein (whose appearance Wily was based on) was called "Jakob Weil".
    • It is presumed that Dr. Weil had uncovered knowledge of Dr. Wily's life and works to analyze Zero; evidence in Area X-2's background has him labeled DR.W.N∞ (Dr. Wily Number Infinity) and 'End of All' (Dr. Wily's original intention for his final creation).
  • It should be noted that "Weil" is technically a correct translation of Bairu, if assumed it follows German phonetics; however, "Vile" is the name acknowledged by official Japanese media, proven by the fact that the boss logo in Mega Man Zero 4, which is no longer an Omega symbol, is the letter V in the Japanese game (changed into W in the English releases).
    • On the cover of the U.S. release of Mega Man Zero Collection, Dr. Weil's boss symbol was still V like in the Japanese version, rather than W.
