―Drill Man, Mega Man: Robot Master Field Guide

Drill Man (ドリルマン Doriruman) is a Wily Number originally created by Doctor Mikhail Cossack to dig in construction sites with his drills. When Dr. Wily forced Dr. Cossack to work for him, Drill Man was converted into a combat robot to fight against Mega Man in Mega Man 4, basing himself deep underground.

Drill Man has two large drills on his arms in place of hands, and another drill on his head. The drills on his arms are removable and can be adjusted depending on the hardness of the soil he must work through.[1] Those drills can grind through solid rock and earth, which he incorporates into his attacking strategy- burrowing into the ground to avoid attacks, before leaping up from underground to ambush his foes. His Special Weapon, the Drill Bomb, is an explosive drilling missile launched from his arms to pierce into dense objects or armor, before detonating inside of them to cause the maximum possible damage, akin to Crash Man's Crash Bomber.

Appearance[]

Drill Man is a humanoid robot with seemingly black body. He has a red head with round blue eyes and a drill on top. He has a red chest plate with green orb on it, a yellow torso, red shoulders, and red lower limbs with yellow details on the knees and the sides of the forearms. He has drills instead of hands.

Personality[]

Drill Man is diligent and hard-working, but can be dangerously haphazard at times — he dislikes doing calculations and planning ahead, and his lack of patience can negatively affect the quality of his work, as he has a tendency to rush his jobs whenever he gets bored. Despite often making dangerous mistakes such as damaging nearby gas pipes during his digging operations, he has a talent for finding things hidden underground— having once received a reward for discovering a hot spring.

Video game appearances[]

Mega Man 4[]

Drill Man is one of the eight bosses from the Stage Select Screen, and defeating him will reward the player with Drill Bomb and Rush Jet.

Attack pattern[]

Drill Man's attack pattern can be rather tedious. He pulls from a pool of attacks randomly, but never repeats the attacks too many times. His first and primary attack is to drill underground, making him almost completely invincible. After roughly 4 seconds, he will emerge from where the player was standing (jumping out quite high) in hopes of sharking them from underneath, though this puts him back in the arena. It can be avoided by simply keeping in movement when he is close to appear. He usually starts with this move due to being more likely to drill when far away from Mega Man. His second attack is to high jump in the player's general direction, which he is more likely to do when closer. His third and most complex attack is to fire Drill Bombs while walking, which is more likely to be used at an intermediate distance.[2] He will walk forward in the player's general direction until he reaches a wall, but he will briefly stop after walking a set distance to fire a Drill Bomb straight forward in the player's general direction, though this will not change his walking direction. The Drill Bomb deflects shots and will explode shortly after its release or when it hits a wall. It is important to note; the more distance Drill Man has to walk, the more Drill Bombs he is going to be shooting at Mega Man.

Weakness[]

Drill Man is weak to Dive Missile. Unlike most other primary weaknesses, this weapon does 3 damage instead of the usual 4. Dive Missile also cannot home in on Drill Man when he is underground, unfortunately. As with most other bosses, Drill Man takes three damage from a fully-charged buster shot and a fully charged Pharaoh Shot. While not a weakness, Rain Flush is the only weapon able to damage Drill Man while he is burrowing underground.

Mega Man III[]

Drill Man is part of the four bosses in the second Stage Select Screen, which all come from Mega Man 4.

Attack pattern[]

Drill Man's difficulty increased in this game. This is primarily because his "Drill Bomb walking" is made even more unpredictable, and harder to dodge as a result. Basically, Mega Man's shorter jump height means that jumping over Drill Man is nearly pixel-perfect. However, Drill Man no longer shoots Drill Bombs within set intervals, instead he just shoots them whenever he wants to. He won't always stop his walk at a wall and can instead stop it whenever he wants to go into another attack of his. He can also turn around mid-walk to follow the player, adding to its unpredictability. His other attacks aren't too much different: his jumps cover much more distance and his underground drilling doesn't make him invincible anymore, allowing the player to land more hits while he is drilling. He also does not leap out of the ground when resurfacing; he simply climbs out. When Drill Man rises out of the ground, he does not have a contact hitbox until he resurfaces completely, making him easier to avoid. If the player is lucky, Drill Man will attack by drilling underground long enough that the player can defeat him without having to face the Drill Bomb walking.

Weakness[]

Drill Man's weakness is once again Dive Missile, and takes 3 damage from it. However, it is still unable to home in on him when he is underground. As with most other bosses, Drill Man takes 3 damage from a fully-charged buster shot. It is ideal to charge when Drill Man is underground.

Mega Man X DiVE[]

Drill Man appeared as Maverick Data in the Deep Log, being the boss from the Co-op stage 11-2, Volcano, and the twenty-third boss from the Boss Challenge mode. Besides Drill Bomb and burrowing underground, Drill Man has the following additions:

  • While underground, Drill Man will poke his head out in the player's position once, then return. He cannot be damaged.
  • The distance from Drill Man's jump when leaving the ground was increased, supposedly to be able to reach players using Wall Kick.
  • Drill Man rarely walks while on the surface.
  • Drill Man launches three drills side by side straight ahead in a way similar to the Tornado Fang from Mega Man X3.
  • Drill Man jumps and launches three drills side by side in a diagonal angle.
  • Drill Man launches six drills upward that reappear at the same time from different directions. Although he launches six drills, seven drills will appear, three vertically, two horizontally, and two diagonally. The direction of the drills will be shown ahead by a line, revealing six blind spots. They can be avoided by crouching in four spots or by wall kicking in two spots. He won't take damage during the attack.

Players can obtain a weapon chip from Drill Man that enables the skill Jet Drill on Sprayer type weapons. When equipped, a drill will be launched with the sprayed attack, increasing the damage. The drill can pass through surfaces.

Mega Man X DiVE[]

English Drill Man was originally designed and built as a driller robot for construction purposes but Dr. Wily modified him and gave him the serial DW No.27. The drills on his hands are interchangable and can be replaced with different drill heads for different purposes, including explosive ones that are charged with dynamite.

By the way, Drill Man's weakness is Dive Man's "Dive Missile," but does that have anything to do with the Deep Log...?

Drill Man appeared in the episodes "The Big Shake", "Showdown at Red Gulch" and "Master of Disaster" from the Mega Man animated series. The only difference between his appearance in the show and his game counterpart is the increased size of his arms. He also had an action figure.

Drill Man is voiced by Scott McNeil.

Mega Man: Fully Charged[]

Digging Time

Drill Man's appearance in Mega Man: Fully Charged.

Drill Man is one of the Robot Masters recruited by Sergeant Breaker Night. This version of Drill Man is bulky and relies more on physical strength as his drills can't be launched nor explode. Both his head and arm drills are larger, his feet are more cylinder shaped, he has two additional drills on his shoulders, one additional drill on his back. Drill Man also has a green gem on his front that glows whenever he speaks.

Mega Man Megamix[]

Drill Man is a construction site worker robot that has drills built onto his head and the ends of his arms, which grants him greater stability while drilling underground. When faced with a solid rockbed, Drill Man will drill a hole and insert one of his Drill Bombs into the hole. By focusing the explosion on one point in this way, Drill Man is able to efficiently break through any obstruction. The timing of the explosion is controlled by a remote signal emitted from Drill Man himself. When Drill Man was modified for combat, both his external armor and the strength of his bombs were enhanced.

Drill Man first appeared in the story "The Grim Reaper of Resurrection", which happens after the events from Mega Man 4. When Skull Man captured Dr. Cossack, Drill Man was also captured alongside Pharaoh Man and Dust Man and the three were reprogrammed by Dr. Wily to fight against Mega Man and Dr. Cossack's remaining robots. He is defeated by Dive Man and later repaired by Bright Man.

In Mega Man Gigamix, Drill Man and the other Cossack Numbers appeared in the beginning of the story "To a Shining Morrow" to rescue Mega Man from the three Stardroids chasing him. Their combined attack, powered up by seven crystals, was able to destroy Uranus.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

Drill Man first appeared in the in the crossover Worlds Collide. In Sonic the Hedgehog #250, Drill Man was among the Robot Master army fighting Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, Proto Man, Rush, Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles, Shadow, E-123 Omega, Silver, Blaze, and the Chaotix. Drill Man also ended up inadvertently destroyed by Dive Man's Dive Missile, which had been aimed at Sonic.

Later, in Mega Man #34, Drill Man's eventual creation was alluded to during the expedition to the Lanfront Ruins. When Mega Man commented to Doctor Cossack that it would be helpful to have more digging Robot Masters like Quake Woman, the doctor stated his intentions to create one, but was cut off before he could name Drill Man. Drill Man had a cameo appearance in Mega Man #55.

Trivia[]

MM2 Drill Man

Mega Man 2's unused Drill Man.

  • When the planned boss characters for Mega Man 2 were being decided, Crash Man (named Missile Man at the time) was selected in favor of a boss named Drill Man.
  • Ground Man was originally named Drill Man by his designer, Rockman X author Iwamoto Yoshihiro, but his name was changed because there was already a Drill Man.
  • Drill Man's and Ring Man's stage themes change pitch when they loop.
  • In the English Mega Man & Bass CD database, Drill Man's rewarded finding was changed from a hot spring to a gold mine.
  • Although it is mentioned in some media[Citation needed] that the Dive Missile can home in on Drill Man while he is underground, it is not the case in the actual game. The homing only works while he's above ground. (This could be a mistake.)
