In the Mega Man Zero and Mega Man ZX series, there is a simple element system consisting of Fire, Thunder, and Ice.

History[]

In the first Mega Man Zero, Zero must equipped with an Element Chip and use charged attack.

The EX Skills has been added in the last three Mega Man Zero games. In the Mega Man Zero 2 and Mega Man Zero 3, EX Skill also need to equip with an Element Chip to have element, but their elements are fixed. Buster Shot's EX Skills will replace charged shoot, and its EX Skills are incompatible with each other. Other weapons have no such restriction, they are all non elemental when not equipped with Element Chip.

There is no Element Chips in the Mega Man Zero 4, so charged attack no longer has elements, but EX Skills will have elements by default. In addition to EX Skills, there are two ways to use elemental attacks: using Zero Knuckle to seize the weapon with element from enemis, and using the Cyber-elf's animal ability with level 3/4/5.

In the Mega Man ZX series, element attacks requires the use of specific Biometal or A-Trans.

The three elements show restraint relationship: Thunder is weaker than Ice, Ice is weaker than Fire, Fire is weaker than Thunder. The weakness is only applicable to the enemies, and protagonist always has no weakness, even if it is equipped with element chip or transformation with an element.

  • Fire is strong against Ice and may burn targets for a while, causing additional damage. Thunder enemies are resistant or immune to Fire.
  • Ice is strong against Thunder and may freeze targets for a while. Fire enemies are resistant or immune to Ice.
  • Thunder is strong against Fire and may stun targets for a while. Ice enemies are resistant or immune to Thunder. It can also send electricity to some machines.

Besides the three elements, player attacks may also have the following attributes, which are more prominent in Mega Man ZX Advent:

  • Cutting attacks, like saber slashes, can split most defeated targets in half. In the Mega Man ZX games they also split large energy items into smaller items.
  • Piercing attacks, such as charge shots, pass through most targets, damaging all targets in the way. May leave a hole on a defeated target in Mega Man ZX Advent.
  • The charged Recoil Rod, Vulturon's Guitar Hammer, and other attacks can blow away some targets. The impact also damages the target behind.
  • Some obstacles can only be destroyed by specific attacks, examples including Model F's Megaton Crush and Bifrost's Ice Bite.

Trivia[]

  • Elements were proposed at the end of Zero 1 development[1], this resulted in some bosses like Anubis Necromancess and Asura Basura don't have corresponding elemental designs.
  • The weakness of elements is based on the first Mega Man X[1]: thunder is weaker than ice, ice is weaker than fire, fire is weaker than wind. The wind and thunder were merged into the same element, which makes elements form a cycle
