The Emotion Window, known as Heart Window (ココロウィンドウ Kokoro Windou, kokoro can also mean mind, or spirit) in the Japanese games, is a mechanic introduced to the Mega Man Battle Network series, starting from Mega Man Battle Network 4.
Depending on how the player performs during NetBattles, the Emotion Window can change to reflect the NetNavi's current state, and this will affect the player's performance as long as the changes are in effect. Starting Mega Man Battle Network 5, if MegaMan.EXE is inflicted with a bug from the Navi Customizer or other sources, the Emotion Window will flicker to reflect this.
Recurring[]
These emotion states appears in Mega Man Battle Network 4, 5, and 6.
Normal[]
Normal (平常 Heijō) is MegaMan's default emotion. If MegaMan starts with this emotion, he is capable of going into any other emotion without restrictions.
Full Synchro[]
Full Synchro (フルシンクロ Furushinkuro) is obtained when the player manages to perform a counter hit using a non-dimming chip attack. MegaMan glows bright blue and a pink spinning ring surrounds him. In this state, the player's next chip attack has double power, and attacking enemies will flash blue (or red in BN4) during the period when they can be countered.
Full Synchro expires when MegaMan is hit by an enemy attack, or when he performs a chip attack. It cannot be accessed when MegaMan is using in a Double Soul or Cross, but can be used while he is in Beast Out or Cross MegaMan. Full Synchro can also be initiated while the player is controlling another Navi.
In Battle Network 4, a hidden Emotion Value, known as Heart Value (ココロ値[1] Kokoro-chi) in Japan, can assist MegaMan reach Full Synchro without counter hitting, this system is also used for the Anxious emotion. Each successful Battle Chip hitting on the enemy, or using chip recovery will increase the value. Once it's high enough, the next chip attack will make MegaMan go Full Synchro without landing a counter hit. The lighter color MegaMan, the higher Emotion Value he starts the battle with. This advantage is not in Battle Network 5 or 6.
Rage[]
Rage[2] (怒り/いかり Ikari), also known as Angry[3]. If MegaMan takes over 300 damage in one hit, or is stunned for more than 2 seconds, he enters an Rage state. Here, he gains Super Armor, meaning his attacks cannot be interrupted, and his next chip attack does double damage. Unlike Full Synchro, Angry does not expire when MegaMan gets hit but instead dissipates over time, or once he uses a chip attack.
Form Change[]
When MegaMan enters transformations (Double Soul, Cross System, Beast Out), his Emotion Window changes accordingly to reflect it. While the transformation is in effect, MegaMan cannot enter any other emotional state. Beast Out is an exception, being able to use Full Synchro. Crosses also have their own sprites if they are used while MegaMan is Exhausted.
Double Souls and Beast Out use a timer, an Emotion Counter, known as Heart Count (ココロカウント Kokoro Kaunto) in Japan, on the right edge of the Emotion Window. Once said timer reaches zero, the transformation expires.
Battle Network 4 and 5[]
These emotion states appears in Mega Man Battle Network 4 and 5.
Anxious[]
Anxious (不安 Fuan), also known as Worried[4]. MegaMan turns Worried when he takes multiple hits without successfully retaliating. While Worried, MegaMan is unable to perform Double Soul. In Battle Network 4, Dark Chips also become available for MegaMan to use. In Battle Network 5, if the player's folder has any Dark Chips, they are guaranteed to appear in the next Custom Screen. This state can be lifted by successfully retaliating, and even entering Full Synchro.
A hidden Emotion Value determines when MegaMan turns Anxious. The value goes down every time he is struck by the enemy, but increases whenever he lands a chip or uses chip recovery. The darker color MegaMan is (without starting in Evil emotion), the lower Emotion Value he starts with.
Evil[]
Evil (悪[5] Aku), also known as Evil State (悪状態 [6] Aku Jōtai) or Dark[7] is obtained when the player has used a Dark Chip. MegaMan's body color becomes darker and for the rest of the fight, MegaMan loses the ability to use Double Souls or enter other emotions.
Once per battle, if MegaMan is to be deleted, he remains at 1 HP. Then he performs Dark Double Soul, known as Dark Soul Unison (ダークソウルユニゾン[8]) in Japan, where he unites with his Dark Soul. MegaMan turns completely black, becoming invincible but uncontrollable for several seconds. He then moves and attacks randomly with Buster shots, loaded chips, or any chips and Program Advances which the player has used the most throughout the game.
If MegaMan has used enough Dark Chips (low karma meter), he can start the battle in Evil state. In Mega Man Battle Network 4, this means that Dark Chips become available for use immediately, and gains access to the DS Navi chips and Evil Chips such as Static and Muramasa. Evil MegaMan however, is unable to use SP Navi chips and "Good" Chips such as Gun Del Sol and Sanctuary.
Because no other Navi has the Evil Emotion Window programmed into them, other Navis under the player's control cannot use Dark Chips - they will simply fail to work (like an Atk+10 chip on its own) if the player attempts to use one that way.
Critical[]
Critical[9] (危機[10]/きき[11] Kiki), also known as Danger [12]. Available only in the DS version of Mega Man Battle Network 5, the Critical State triggers if the player performs poorly in battle, like taking a large amount of damage and falling to low HP. The player can then speak or blow into the microphone to give the current Navi the following abilities: (The strength of the effect depends on the volume, the louder the volume, the better the effects are [13])
- Guaranteed Full Synchro
- A chance of Barrier, Barrier 100, or Barrier 200
- A chance of HP Restoration: 100, 200, or 300
- A chance to boost all Buster stats: +1, +2, or +3.
This state can be obtained while controlling any Navi.
Battle Network 6[]
These emotion states appear in Mega Man Battle Network 6.
Tired[]
Tired[14][15][16] (疲労/ひろう Hirō), also known as Exhausted[17], is obtained once MegaMan's emotion counter reaches 0 due to use of Beast Out. MegaMan cannot enter Full Synchro, but he is still capable of using Crosses (each Cross has a unique sprite if initiated while Tired). If MegaMan attempts to initiate Beast Out a second time during battle, he instead enters Beast Over.
If MegaMan enters a battle in this state, he cannot initiate Beast Out or Beast Over at all.
Very Tired[]
Very Tired [18][19], also known as Limit (極限/きょくげん Kyokugen)[20], or Exhausted[21], occurs if MegaMan has yet to finish off the opponent after entering Beast Over. He reaches his Limit the moment the Custom Gauge fills and Beast Over expires. MegaMan suffers from a severe HP glitch that will rapidly plummet his health gauge to 1, his Buster stats are all reduced to 1, and he cannot initiate any transformations.

Trivia[]
- A well-known, yet risky, method, is to glitch the Humor program on purpose. This results in the Emotion Window repeatedly switching between any of MegaMan's available states, allowing a lucky player to use the attack bonus of the Full Synchro or Rage states without going through the difficulty of triggering it themselves. But it can also set him to Worried and Exhausted, locking him out of his form changes.
