This article is about the character Dark MegaMan.EXE. For boss info, see Dark MegaMan.EXE (boss). For his anime counterpart, see Dark Rockman.EXE (anime). For the Mega Man Battle Network 4 boss related to Dark MegaMan, see MegaMan DS.

Dark MegaMan.EXE, known as Dark Rockman.EXE (ダークロックマン.EXE[2] Dāku Rokkuman Eguze) in Japan, is a dark version of MegaMan.EXE created from the Dark Power of Dark Chips.

He initially appears in Mega Man Battle Network 4 as MegaMan DS (Dark Soul (ダークソウル Dāku Souru)), known as Rockman DS (ロックマンDS(ダークソウル) Rokkuman Dāku Souru) in Japan, where he was extracted from MegaMan by various characters. MegaMan himself was forcefully transformed into Dark MegaMan in Battle Network 5 when Nebula directly infuses him with Dark Power.

History[]

Mega Man Battle Network 4[]

After learning none of their attacks can even damage ShadeMan, Lan and MegaMan are forced to use a Dark Chip in order to defeat him. The Dark Sword instantly wipes ShadeMan out and is the first indication of MegaMan's Dark Soul. After The Eagle/Hawk Tournament, LaserMan appears and extracts MegaMan's Dark Soul into a physical shadow. It then possesses GutsMan (Red Sun version) or AquaMan (Blue Moon version) and fights MegaMan. In the game's finale, Duo extracts the Dark Soul as well, but this time forces MegaMan to battle the pure darkness within himself, which manifests as MegaMan DS.

In the postgame's Black Earth area, MegaMan encounters the Mirror of Truth which pushes MegaMan to face the truth, extracting MegaMan DS for another fight. After the battle, the mirror states the darkness will never fade and MegaMan will have to keep fighting it. A bright silhouette of MegaMan appears after the battle, if MegaMan is still in Evil emotion while talking to it, it will frown in disappointment. If MegaMan isn't, the silhouette will give him the Hub Batch Navi Customizer Program.

Mega Man Battle Network 5[]

Nebula captures MegaMan after the SciLab Area 3 Liberation Mission with the intention of turning him into the dark warrior, Dark MegaMan. Heel Navis implant a Dark Chip into MegaMan, which the agonizing pain of Dark Power even breaks the sleeping program MegaMan was placed in. With MegaMan missing, Lan must operate another Navi, and once reaching the next Liberation Mission location, it reveals that Dark MegaMan is in charge of it. After liberating the area, Dark MegaMan tries to fight back against the team but MegaMan overcomes his darkness thanks to Lan's voice and retakes his body. With the original MegaMan overcoming his darkness, he can now use the Chaos Unison transformation.

Dark MegaMan is again fightable in Nebula Area 6 when Chaos Lord takes his form, if the player takes two minutes or less to defeat all the DS Navis after their initial defeat. However, there is no bonus for redefeating Dark MegaMan.

MegaMan DS art from New Edition Volume 5.

In the manga series, a version of Dark MegaMan appears as MegaMan DS (Dark Soul), known as Rockman Dark Soul (ロックマンDS/ ロックマンダークソール) in Japan, usually Dark Soul for short. MegaMan DS and LaserMan mysteriously appeared after a defeated Bass collapses after a confrontation with MegaMan. MegaMan DS had been causing other Net forces to confuse him with the real MegaMan, and he even planned to absorb the last of Bass' power. But to do this, he needed enough energy that stemmed from MegaMan's hatred for him. So, to become strong enough to absorb Bass, he needed to trick the actual MegaMan into detesting him deeply, often by putting loved ones in danger, like his NetOp, Lan. He eventually does absorb Bass, and LaserMan as well, betraying him, but he is soon defeated by the power of Lan and MegaMan.

Abilities[]

Emblem Dark MegaMan EXE

Dark MegaMan's Navi Mark

As MegaMan DS, he possesses all of MegaMan's abilities, copying MegaMan's equipped NaviCust parts and Mod Cards set. He will also use MegaMan's Battle Chips and Program Advances that was used throughout the game.

As Dark MegaMan, he no longer copies MegaMan's current setup and also have his own HP amount. He also has his own set of moves (Dark Sword, Dark Cannon, and Quake) in addition to the most used Battle Chips and Program Advances from MegaMan. In his Ω version, Dark MegaMan will copy some of MegaMan’s setup.

In the anime, Dark MegaMan has ingrained the battle patterns of both MegaMan and Lan, essentially making him the two of them combined in one and is able to outmaneuver them by thinking like them. However, due to lacking bonds like the central duo, he cannot mold his strategy instantly like they do, due to their developed teamwork.

In the manga, he is shown to be able to quickly recover from any damage and change the shape of his hands, and the ability to use Dark Aura. When he temporarily absorbed Bass, he had all of his powers. He later absorbed LaserMan and gained his laser powers.

Competitive Play[]

In MMBN4 and MMBN5, MegaMan can lower his "karma" by using Dark Chips in the main game to begin NetBattles against other players as Dark MegaMan. Dark MegaMan is very viable in competitive play due to his high risk, high reward nature surrounding Dark Chips and Evil Chips that Light MegaMan cannot normally use, such as Static, Muramasa, Anubis, BlackWing, and Bug Charge.

However, he is most known for his berserk state upon reaching 1 HP, awakening Dark Soul with Dark Soul Unison. This Dark Soul is capable of spamming powerful Chips with no inputs from the user. It is programmed in all versions of the games to treat Dark Chips the same way of usage frequency as Standard Chips. This alone is a testament to how intense it can be, and why it has garnered a reputation for being seen as overpowered and ultimately uncompetitive in nature.

  • In MMBN4, Dark MegaMan can be deleted with dimming chips that hit multiple times, circumventing the Dark Soul Unison from ever being unleashed. If unleashed however, he is capable of spamming Dark Chips and other powerful Chips that can disrupt the opponent's strategy.
  • In MMBN5, circumventing is no longer possible. Here, Dark MegaMan as the Dark Soul Unison is most famous for constantly spamming the combination of DarkThunder + BigNoise Program Advance if he is properly trained to use only these two attacks in advance.
  • In MMBN5, purposefully failing Chaos Unison Charge Shots is a viable tactic. Training the Dark Soul to use Chips such as Traps to mess up your opponent's defense, using Obstacle chips such as Rock Cube or Guardian to clog up the opponent's field with several objects, or using weak elemental Chips to trigger your own Traps against your opponent, or even using Seeds to give the user an advantageous field of Panels are a few ways in which this tactic proves very effective.
    • This leads to "Light MegaMan Dark Soul" and "Dark MegaMan Dark Soul" builds. Debatably, Light MegaMan makes better use of the Dark Soul than Dark MegaMan can, as Light MegaMan can utilize it several times more in a match than Dark MegaMan, especially when considering usage of Dark Invisible.
  • In the Legacy Collection, the Dark Soul has been changed. It uses weak Chips such as Cannon and MiniBomb if only a few Chips are taught, and will not use any Mega, Giga, or Program Advances unless minimum amounts of taught Chips are reached. However, he can still be trained to use a larger handful of Chips instead, such as SearchMan Chips, Jealousy, AreaGrab, MetaGel, LifeAura, Invisible, Barrier200 until the thresholds are reached, and every attack still proves advantageous.
  • In official tournaments, Capcom devised complicated rules to try and mitigate the Dark Soul when it is properly trained to use only specific powerful Chips.

Trivia[]

  • According to a Dev Q&A, Evil MegaMan spawns from the speck of evil within MegaMan that’s amplified due to the Dark Chip. As Dark Chips have the power to amplify the evil thoughts of its user. [3]
