Wily Machine 5 (ワイリーマシン5号 Wairī Mashin 5 Gō) is a giant skull tank used by Dr. Wily in Mega Man 5. Unlike other Wily Machines, this one doesn't have a second phase of its own, due to a wiring mistake made by Wily.[1]

Mega Man 5[]

Wily Machine 5[]

Wily Machine 5 is the boss of Wily Stage 4, being the final boss of the game along with the Wily Capsule II right after.

Attack Pattern[]

Wily Machine 5 remains stationary on the right side of the arena. The boss's weak point is the cannon in the skull's mouth, but every time this weak point is damaged, the Wily Machine 5 travels forward along the ground to corner Mega Man along the left side of the arena, before returning to its original spot. This movement can make attacks much harder to anticipate and dodge, as the Wily Machine 5 randomly chooses from a pool of 4 attacks.

The first and primary attack has the Wily Machine 5 use a hidden magnet inside the skull cannon to suck in Mega Man towards the boss to deal contact damage, and the pull lasts for 3 or 4 seconds. This attack provides the best opportunity to damage the boss in a safe way without getting ambushed by the other projectiles. Wily Machine 5's main projectile is a blue bouncy ball that gets fired from the skull cannon. The blue balls bounce in arcs and always reach the same height, and although only one ball is fired at a time, it can be fired at 2 different speeds. The slower speed has it bounce multiples times, at a slow enough pace that Mega Man can walk under it just fine, while the faster speed will only get one bounce in. If Mega Man is on the left side and the Wily Machine 5 isn't moving, this fast-moving ball will bounce right over Mega Man's head, but both speeds of the ball are harder to dodge if the Wily Machine 5 is moving. Under the skull cannon is a smaller turret, responsible for shooting 3 pink missiles in a row that fly in a straight line. While they can be slid under, they actually alter their trajectory and change altitude if Mega Man jumps over them, so the player should be more cautious. These pink missiles come out at a fast speed as well, and are very difficult to dodge if the Wily Machine 5 is on the move.

Weakness[]

Wily Machine 5 is actually weak to Super Arrow, which can defeat the boss in 7 hits. Due to the weapon's relatively slow acceleration, it can be tricky to time hits on the boss from afar, but will easily score a hit if used up-close. As with all bosses, Wily Machine 5 takes 3 damage from a fully-charged buster shot.

Wily Capsule II[]

After the Wily Machine 5 is destroyed, the boss music changes and Dr. Wily continues the battle with the Wily Capsule II (ワイリーカプセルII), an upgraded Wily Capsule.

Attack Pattern[]

The Wily Capsule II is much more simple than the Wily Machine 5, and follows a set order of attacks. Using the black background to its advantage, the Wily Capsule II fades in and out as to reappear in different areas of the screen. For the most part, Dr. Wily can appear anywhere except for the direct center, giving Mega Man a kind of safe spot. Whenever the Wily Capsule II appears, he immediately attacks by dropping a pink energy orb straight down to the ground. Upon this orb hitting the ground, it splits off into two orbs that travel along the ground, going away from each other. After this attack, the Wily Capsule II creates four orbs the swirl around it like a shield. Eventually the Wily Capsule II disappears, which causes the diameter of the spiral to increase, letting the orbs cover more range around where the boss was. The spiral then shrinks after reaching it limit, causing the orbs to converge back together and disappear. From here, the Wily Capsule II will repeat the pattern in different locations.

Weaknesses[]

The Wily Capsule II's main weakness is Beat. While only doing 2 damage at a time, this bird automatically homes in on the Wily Capsule II to damage the boss regardless of his location. If Beat is feeling particularly aggressive, he will even circle around where the Wily Capsule II is in the background, exposing his upcoming locations. Even without Beat, Mega Man has several tools to use. As with all bosses, Wily Capsule II takes 3 damage from a fully-charged buster shot. This does the most damage out of any weapon but is limited to the buster's range. Gyro Attack only does 1 damage, but the multi-aiming can hit the boss if it's high in the sky. Gravity Hold does no damage at all, but the bright flash can actually expose the silhouette of where Dr. Wily is in the background: use it after the four orbs disappear to find out where he will show up next.

Aftermath[]

Upon destroying the Capsule, Dr. Wily gets knocked to the ground. Mega Man chases him further down the lab and discovers where Dr. Light is held captive. Dr. Wily jumps down to a lower level and and gets on his knees, bowing to Mega Man in defeat once again. As Mega Man rescues Dr. Light from his prison cell, the castle starts collapsing and Mega Man catches the falling ceiling just before it could crush him and Dr. Light. Dr. Wily uses this opportunity to escape, but Proto Man (from offscreen, having used his whistle to indicate his presence) secretly activates a trigger that blows up a bit of ceiling for Mega Man and Dr. Light to escape through. After they make it outside, the two watch the castle crumbles to pieces as Dr. Wily flies away in his UFO. Proto Man is still hiding out of sight from them, and he slinks away without anyone noticing.
