Masakazu Eguchi (江口正和 Eguchi Masakazu) is the scenario writer for the Mega Man Battle Network series, script writer for Mega Man Legends 2, and director of Mega Man Star Force 2 and the cancelled Mega Man Legends 3. The character Mr. Famous is based on him and has appeared as him on multiple promotional material and events as "Eguchi Meijin" (江口名人 "Expert Eguchi"). He joined Capcom in 1999[1].

Becoming Mr. Famous[]

Eguchi became Meijin (Mr. Famous) out of circumstance after the first game's release. For a CoroCoro Comic event that took place during Golden Week, the boss was looking for someone to go as the "EXE Professor" (エグゼ博士). No one wanted to take it, until the boss walked to Eguchi. Feeling the overwhelming pressure, being 21 and only been in the company for 2 years,[2] he accepted. Since the "Professor" name sounded weak, the title was changed into "Meijin" (Expert). They hastily borrowed a plain white coat from a nearby hospital for the costume [1][3]. Eguchi carried a Game Boy Advance around, accepting challenges with a successful winning streak until Mega Man Battle Network 2. Afterwards, fans started to improve their playing, so he was forbidden to play them by worried staff, since there is now a high risk of losing and they don't want the Meijin image to be ruined[4].

Trivia[]

  • Eguchi's favorite Robot Master is Air Man.[6]
  • Eguchi's favorite Battle Chip is Anti Damage.[7][8]
  • Eguchi designed ElecMan.EXE's stage in the first Mega Man Battle Network. He has since apologized due to its poor reception[9]. He took what he learned and incorporated it into Battle Network 2. He cites Mother Computer as one of his favorites[10].
  • The Mega Man Battle Network series has a plethora of names on the Bulletin Boards and side characters named after the development team's members. This was due to Eguchi having a hard time thinking of names and just used the names of people around him (without their consent)[3].
