Mega Man Battle Network 5: Double Team DS, known as Rockman EXE 5 DS Twin Leaders (ロックマンエグゼ5DS ツインリーダーズ Rokkuman Eguze Faibu Dī Esu Tsuin Rīdāzu) in Japan, is a Nintendo DS enhanced port of Mega Man Battle Network 5 with new content and bugfixes.

Mega Man Battle Network 5: Double Team DS is a collection of the two versions of Mega Man Battle Network 5, Team ProtoMan and Team Colonel, packaged into one Nintendo DS game. These versions are still separate games, split through 2 different save files. This does not outmode the original GameBoy Advance game, as inserting it into the GBA slot will unlock special features in the DS version.

New features[]

Double Team DS features enhancements and additional content not seen in the original GBA versions of the game:

  • A new animated opening sequence has been added. The Japanese version features the song “Be Somewhere” by Buzy, the opening theme of Rockman EXE Stream, while international versions features "THEME OF ROCKMAN EXE ~TGS2002 mix~".
  • Dual screen enhancements: Double Team DS utilizes the DS's two screens to add a mini-map of every Cyberworld area that tracks MegaMan as he explores and the entire Start Menu has been redone to accommodate the touch screen. In the real world, an animated 3D model of the MegaMan is featured with a jack-in button. MegaMan's color will change depending on MegaMan's good or bad or is in Cross MegaMan. ProtoMan and Colonel also have models while they are being operated.
  • Music: The entire soundtrack has been redone with new instrumentals.
  • E-Mails: E-Mail menu has been expanded and sectioned into Team, Pals, and Others.
  • Critical State: A new state in the Emotion Window that turns it pink. The player can yell something into the DS's microphone and if they succeeded, MegaMan or the current Navi will gain a randomly selected combination of bonuses such as Full Synchro, HP recovery or a Barrier.
  • Party Battle System: In the non-critical parts of the plot, one can select two Navis on Lan's HP and they can used in battles as Party Navis. These Navis can be customized with the Party Customizer and can also perform Double Attacks together.
  • Transport Chip: A "Transport Chip", or TP Chip for short, can be used in Liberation battles. It switches a Navi with a corresponding one in the other version (e.g. ProtoMan → Colonel). Up to three Navis can be switched with their counterparts at any one time during a Liberation Mission.
  • New Battle Chips: Some Battle Chips with new codes or extremely rare codes in the GBA version can be obtained via Lotto Number. The event chips, LeaderRaid and ChaosLord can now be obtained in game normally.
  • Liberation Mission: Switching Navis now can be done with the X and Y Button. The menu can be opened during a mission, but with limited options. The Folder can be modified and saving is done in the menu instead of through the leader/healer Navi. Having Navis in close proximity together on the field can have them support each other in battle.
  • Team Navis: Team Navis can no longer use Evil Chips, they will now dissipate. However, TomahawkMan the boss and playable Navi now has Status Guard, making him immune to status effects.
  • Memory Game: New Memory Minigames can be played in certain Comps. Completing them will reward Party Programs for the Party Customizer.
  • Network: The Party Battle System can be used in multiplayer. A Tournament Mode hosted by Ribitta can be done by connecting 3 to 8 players. Players on standby can spectate the current match in their own game. Also, the 15 turn limit is turned off in Tournament.
  • Voice acting has been added for several points of the game. New sound effects have been added as well.
  • Several characters have changing character portraits depending on the situation.
  • Chip Traders and BugFrag Trader can insert multiple chip rolls at once instead of only rolling 1 chip at a time.
  • Some loading speeds have been altered: The transition of going into battles is now faster. Saving the game now takes much longer.
  • The epilogue cutscene after the game can now be skipped.
  • Many bugfixes from the international release of MMBN5 GBA have been added to all regions, and even more bugfixes exclusive to the DS version of top of that. Despite this, a few bugs that weren't caught still remains.

GBA connectivity[]

GBA Battle Network games[]

Using the W Slot[4] (Double Slot)[5] feature, if one has a Mega Man Battle Network, Mega Man Battle Network 2, 3, 4, or 5 Game Pak in the GBA slot, special bonuses will be unlocked in the game. Rockman EXE 4.5 Real Operation can also be used in the Japanese version. Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge does not unlock anything.

  • Remixed battle music: The virus battle music is changed into a remix version of the slotted game's virus battle theme.
  • Liberation Mission: Depending on the game slotted in, one of the team Navi's Special Chip will have its attack power increased for that mission.
  • Additional bonuses: Different games will unlock a unique feature as a tribute to that game, as stated by the characters that distribute them.
    • MMBN1: An NPC will give an Extra Folder called DuelFolder. A tribute to heated Network Duels (multiplayer battles) being part of the series since the start.
    • MMBN2: An NPC will sell Sub Chips at a 50% discount. A tribute to the game introducing Sub Chips into the series.
    • MMBN3: An NPC will sell exclusive Navi Customizer Programs that couldn't be bought in the original GBA version. A tribute to the game introducing the Navi Customizer into the series.
    • MMBN4: The combinations for Program Advances will be posted on multiple BBS across the game. A tribute to the game being about tournaments and learning the PAs is a part of improving one's battle technique.
    • EXE4.5: A side quest can be started that will reward the player with a large sum of Zennys. A tribute to how the game required real money for real Battle Chips to play efficiently using the Battle Chip Gate.
    • MMBN5: Opposite version Navi Chips can be bought at the Free Space in Higsby's for a huge amount of Zennys. A tribute to the game's teams.
  • MMBN5 GBA Bonuses: If a Gameboy Advance version of MMBN5 has been completed or at least has some progress in it, special rewards will be unlocked in the Nintendo DS version.
    • Import Folder: The GBA equipped Folder can be imported into the DS game as an Extra Folder called BN5Folder. This will also allow Giga Chips to be used in the opposite version.
    • Transport Chip Reward: A MMBN5 GBA with a cleared story will let the player receive an E-Mail that will give an early TP Chip that would’ve been given if the story is cleared in the other save file.
    • Bass Cross MegaMan: Previously an e-Reader card exclusive, this is a Cross form that will replace MegaMan's normal form. Gained by slotting in a MMBN5 GBA with the Bass title screen mark obtained. Due to a glitch, this will also trigger if the game has no Continue save data.
  • Bass XX: Previously requiring e-Reader cards equipped, Bass XX can now be fought when each previously mentioned Mega Man Battle Network Gameboy Advance game is slot in at least once, and a Cross MegaMan is equipped. This is an even more powerful version of Bass with a 150 HP Barrier and 4000 HP, he replaces the Bass Ω random encounter.

Boktai games[]

  • Otenko's Challenge: Can be unlocked by putting Boktai or Boktai 2 (or Shin Bokura no Taiyō: Gyakushū no Sabata in the Japanese version) in the GBA slot. The 100-man challenge in End City is replaced with Otenko and his 1000-bat challenge. Doing it will give Crossover points for the Boktai Trader. The newer the slotted Boktai game is, the more points will be given.
  • Sol Cross MegaMan: A new Cross form for normal MegaMan based on Django. Requires Shin Bokura no Taiyō: Gyakushū no Sabata for the Japanese game, but Boktai 2 for international games (due to the third game not being localized).

Removed features[]

The collection also removes some features that were in the GBA games:

  • The Crossover Battle with Boktai 2 is not available.
  • The Progress Chip Gate and the e-Reader cards from the Japanese version are not available as the Nintendo DS cannot connect with them. The Operation Battle and Mod Card features are not present in MMBN5 DS. The Navi Change feature has been retooled into the Party Battle System.

Voice cast[]

The Japanese anime voice cast reprise their roles in the game. The English NT Warrior anime voice cast however, did not return and has been recasted with sound-alike interpretations.

Development[]

The development of the DS version of the game consisted of 15 people over a year, and then 6 months for American and European localizations.[7] The Capcom team that worked on the usual Battle Network games like Masakazu Eguchi did not work on this version of the game, instead another team at Capcom was responsible.[8]

Trivia[]

  • In the international versions' game data, Rockman EXE 4.5 Real Operation and Shin Bokura no Taiyō: Gyakushū no Sabata have their bonuses translated but are inaccessible by normal means. They have the preliminary game titles of "MegaMan Battle Network 4.5:" and "Boktai 3".

Text Errors[]

Some textual errors were fixed but many from the original GBA version still exist in the English translation of game. These errors were also carried over to the European translations of the game. New text errors and issues were also created.

  • The names of the Double Attacks have the first word in the attack just as a letter and the later words unlocalized, left in romanized Japanese.
  • Some new dialogue places a space after a comma, when they don't do that in the traditional Battle Network games. As such, there will be new cutscenes that have text with space after comma, then revert to no space after comma when it begins using original MMBN5 GBA text.
  • The new dialogue uses "HomePage", when previous game iterations (including MMBN5 GBA) has only called them by its abbreviation, "HP".
  • If you challenge the MagnetMan free-fight in the chapter where ProtoMan’s Navi, there is a Japanese line leftover in one of the textboxes. This error was not present in the GBA version.
