Volcano is Magma Dragoon's stage in Mega Man X4. It is where Magma Dragoon has chosen to wait for the Maverick Hunters to do battle.
History[]
Magma Dragoon was once a dutiful Maverick Hunter, commanding the 14th Special Unit, and became acquainted with X and Zero of the 17th and 0th Units respectively. Dragoon secretly always wanted a fight-to-the-death duel with the two legendary Maverick Hunters.
A chance at this dream appeared when Sigma came and promised him what he desired most. Sigma ordered him to destroy the aerial city of Sky Lagoon, and Dragoon did so by sabotaging the city's power reactor and having a giant Mechaniloid named Eregion wreak havoc on the colony as well. This caused it to crash onto the city below it, and not only killed thousands of innocent civilians, but resulted in Repliforce (who were on patrol in the area for helping at the time) being blamed for the incident, pushing General into starting a bid for Reploid independence which in turn was viewed as a coup d'état by the Maverick Hunters. Then, Sigma ordered Dragoon to work for the Repliforce, and aid them in their coup.[1]
After the Sky Lagoon incident, Dragoon hid in a volcano with some Repliforce troops to goad X and Zero into fighting him. Once they reach him, he boasts about having deceived them and demands a battle. When defeated, he apologizes for his actions, stating how he had always dreamed of fighting X/Zero, and that ''he'' (Sigma) offered him that chance, which he simply could not refuse. Dragoon then perishes.
Description[]
Volcano Area 1[]
Volcano's stage icon
The first half of the stage has flaming rocks which will act as the main obstacle of the area. The stage consists of platforms and death pits, mostly.
Volcano Area 2[]
The second half of the stage starts with platforms that will start to be destroyed by flaming rocks. After reaching the other side, there is a Life Up which can be reached by doing a dash jump on the edge of the platform to have enough distance to reach the other platform. After advancing a bit, there is another hard to reach platform, which this time can be reached by doing a dash jump inside the Ride Armor and jumping out of it to have enough reach and wall jump on top. There is a rock wall that can only be broken with a charged Twin Slasher. After breaking the wall, there is a Light Capsule with the Fourth Armor's Body Part. X/Zero can go across the lower path with the Ride Armor and can enter Magma Dragoon's boss fight with it by breaking the rocks on the lower path.

| In Area 2, there is a ledge above a free Ride Armor. The ledge can be reached by dash-jumping in the Ride Armor and ejecting mid-air. Use a charged Twin Slasher to destroy the rock wall blocking the way to the capsule. |

Volcano is a stage in Mega Man X DiVE. It is the tenth Story stage, and features its own Magma Dragoon as a final boss.

Rockman X4 manga[]
The Volcano in the manga, where the massacred Repliforce Air Wing lies.
The volcano appears near the final stages of the Great Repliforce War. Commander Storm Owl of the Repliforce Air Wing has taken his fleet to soar over the volcano to engage in unspecified activities in support of the Repliforce's rebellion for independence. X tracks them and with the power of his Ultimate Armor, utterly lays waste to the fleet and brutally kills the soldiers aboard it by shooting them down. The fleet crashes into the volcanic island, and Storm Owl lays seriously wounded but still alive. Owl sits in befuddlement at X's amazing power, saying it far exceeds what Reploids can normally have, and accuses X of being the true Maverick, not Repliforce. X then abruptly kills him with a charged buster shot, and tells Owl that he was a Maverick and the humans made no mistake in deeming Repliforce as such, unaware of the real culprit behind Repliforce's coup. With the death of Storm Owl, the entirety of the Repliforce Air Wing is thus wiped out.
Suddenly, Magma Dragoon emerges rising from the ground underneath X, and challenges him to a fight, saying power is the only thing that matters, not the "law of heaven" or the "law of the land". Dragoon puts his massive strength and high skills to use, and blocks X's blast with a fire barrier. Dragoon then attacks X with a powerful fire blast. X is able to disperse it by flying directly at it with a Nova Strike charge, and then charges at Dragoon. However, Dragoon catches X in mid-air during his Strike, pounds him to the ground and punches him away into a crater, and compliments X's power while doing so, saying he understands why X bears the title of legend.
Dragoon then assumes X is dead and confidently remarks that Heaven gave the Earth a fleeting legend. Dragoon also remarks that his boredom is what led him to become a Maverick, so he could fight serious battles. X, who has been losing his mind to the power of the Ultimate Armor, has a vision of Zero, Dr. Cain and Marty reaching out for him. X then flies out of the crater and fires a charged shot at Dragoon. Dragoon tries to stop it with a fire blast, but X's power proves too much and Dragoon is then bisected by the charged shot and killed.
