Nightmare Mother (ナイトメアマザー Naitomea Mazā) is the boss of Gate's Secret Lab Stage 1 in Mega Man X6. The Nightmare Mother is composed of two cube-shaped aggregations of Nightmare Viruses, which work together to attack the Maverick Hunters.

Strategy[]

The two parts of the Nightmare Mother circulate the arena on opposite sides, either clockwise or counterclockwise. They pause for a moment between each movement, moving faster as they lose health. On Xtreme difficulty, they also fire bullets while moving.

Every once in a while, the Nightmare Mothers stop to launch elemental attacks from their cores, exposing their weakpoints. When a core is destroyed, its empty mass continues to move while the other attacks. They are weak to Metal Anchor/Rakukoujin, and X's Shadow Armor can deal massive damage to the cores with just his Charge Shot or Giga Attack.

MMX6 NightmareMother Water Water (ウオーター Uōtā)[1]
A Nightmare Mother shoots a water bullet, which travels across surfaces in a wave like the Goo Shaver from Mega Man X5.
Damage: 4:6:7
MMX6 NightmareMother Thunder Thunder (サンダー Sandā)[1]
A Nightmare Mother releases lightning balls horizontally, striking the floor with thunderbolts. Only used when a core faces downward.
Damage: 3:4:5 (ball), 6:8:10 (bolt)
MMX6 NightmareMother Fireball
MMX6 NightmareMother Flame
Flame & Fireball (フレーム&ファイアボール Furēmu to faiabōru)[1]
A Nightmare Mother releases fireballs, depending on the core's position. If the core faces upward, it spouts a fountain of fireballs that rain down. If the core faces downward, it drops a fireball that covers the entire floor in flames.
Damage: 3:4:5 (Fireball), 6:8:10 (Flame)
MMX6 NightmareMother BodySlam Tackle (体当たり Taiatari)[1]
Once a Nightmare Mother's core is destroyed, it performs a single brutal body slam instead of using an elemental attack.
Damage: 4:6:7

Trivia[]

  • The Nightmare Mother appears before the boss battle with the sound of a heartbeat.
  • The sprite used in Flame & Fireball when Nightmare Mother sets the ground ablaze is taken directly from Dhalsim's "Yoga Flame" attack in the Marvel vs. Capcom series.
  • The way that they can only be damaged while attacking is very similar to the Devil series of robots (e.g., the Yellow Devil) from the original Mega Man series.
  • The Nightmare Mother shares its boss theme with D-1000.
  • While fan sites sometimes incorrectly refer to Nightmare Mother as "Nightmare King", no official source for this name is known to exist.
