Zero in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite
"Target destroyed. Returning to base."
―Zero's victory, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Zero is a character from the Mega Man X series, appearing in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. He first appeared as a playable character in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars, before entering the series in Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds and returning for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

History[]

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars[]

Zero's Mega Man X series incarnation made his fighting game debut in the updated re-release, Ultimate All-Stars. He was an unlockable character, available for purchase from the Store after using six different Capcom characters to finish Arcade mode. In Zero's Arcade ending, after defeating Yami he is pulled into a rift and sees a vision of Dr. Wily, before waking up being rescued by X, Alia, and Axl.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds[]

Zero debuted in the Marvel vs. Capcom series in the game's updated re-release, Fate of Two Worlds. He is a base character in the roster. His moveset is largely similar to his appearance in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, but with some differences (listed below). His theme music is a remix of his boss music from Mega Man X2.

In his Arcade ending, Zero is assisted by Silver Surfer in returning to his world, but winds up in the Neo Arcadian era instead. Silver Surfer informs him that this time and world already have a Zero going by the name of "Mega Man Zero". The Surfer's bewilderment may be a nod to early confusion in the fandom about Zero being considered a "Mega Man" or not, what with the title of his own series. In the updated Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the ending has an additional line of dialogue: after Zero claims he is not Mega Man Zero, he further adds that "if there ever was such a being" in his bewilderment.

Zero also appears in Nova's ending as part of the new Mega Nova Corps, alongside Mega Man, Roll, Proto Man, and Beat.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite[]

Zero returns as a playable character alongside X, marking the first time the duo to be playable in the same crossover fighting game. He retains most of his characteristics from the previous game with several gameplay changes. His battle music is a new remix of his Mega Man X2 theme.

In the story mode, Zero is taken over by Grandmaster Meio from the Strider series using the Power Stone. X and Rocket Raccoon fight him inside Knowmoon, and successfully repair him back to his senses. He then becomes an ally of the heroes for the remainder of the story.

Moveset[]

In every game in the series, Zero is always one of the most formidable characters due to his impressive speed, deceptively high power, and variable combo potential. He has strong projectiles with his Zero Buster, and strong close-range attacks with his Z-Saber. Most of his moves are based on the Techniques he gains from bosses throughout the Mega Man X series.

Alternate colors and costumes[]

MvC3 Zero colors

Zero's colors in Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds.

In Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Zero's alternate colors all resemble other characters from the series: The blue one is based on X, the black one having a resemblance to his "older brother" Bass, and the purplish one resembling Axl.

In Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Zero gains three new colors, one for his Mega Man Zero version, another based on Vile, and the last based on X's first armor.[1] His normal X scheme, however, is removed in this version, since he gets a downloadable X alternate skin.

Notes:

  • Capcom characters in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 don't follow the standards of Marvel's Power Grid. Zero's power grid statistics also change in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. (Strength and Stamina becomes 2/7, Intelligence becomes 3/7, and all other stats become 5/7). It should be kept in mind, that the crossover are not canon to the Mega Man X series and the Power Grid ratings may be mere interpretations of the developers.
  • The bio states that Sigma discovered Zero in a cave, which is incorrect as he was found in a desolate laboratory by Gamma's unit, which met an unfortunate demise upon awakening him. Sigma however only fought Zero, and barely made it out alive at a terrible cost.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite[]

Like X, the origins of the reploid known as Zero are shrouded in mystery. He is fitted with startlingly advanced technology such as a learning system that captures techniques and abilities from his opponents in an entirely different way to X. Who could have developed such a system?

Awakened in a future where humans coexisted with thinking, feeling, free-willed reploids, Zero carried a sinister virus that made him a menace to society. It was Sigma who put a stop to his rampage. Now, their roles are reversed; Zero fights for peace as an elite Maverick Hunter who X looks up to, while Sigma has become the greatest threat of the age. Like X, Zero will stop at nothing to protect humanity from Ultron Sigma.

Trivia[]

  • One of Zero's winquotes in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 snidely mentions X ("If X were here, he would have tried to talk things out first. Unfortunately for you, X isn't here."), which some may see as a response to many fans' negative response of X's absence in the game. Ironically, X himself is his DLC costume in the same game.[2]
  • In Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Hawkeye refers to Zero as an "Angry space midget with a sword." Zero's win quote to him mentions that like X he is cunning, but also like X, he lost to him. With Frank West, he calls him a civilian, and his win quote when defeating Frank West refer to his camera as a "photo capture device". Zero likely refers to it in this technical sense because cameras in the future may look much different than the one Frank uses.
  • In both versions of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Zero will say, "Another soulless copy." when facing himself in a mirror match. This is a possible reference to both Black Zero and Zero Nightmare.
  • In both versions of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, when Zero uses his Genmu Zero attack, if one sees Zero carefully, he will be emitting an aura similar to his awakened state in Mega Man X5 when he executes the attack.
  • Despite the move list in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite using the English names of F-Splasher and C-Sword, Zero will shout their Japanese names Hisuishou and Mikazukizan, respectively, during gameplay like his other moves.
