This article is about the Special Weapon. For the Mega Man Zero 4 weapon, see Zero Knuckle. For the Battle Chip, see Sword (Battle Chip).

Flame Sword (フレイムソード Fureimu Sōdo) is the Special Weapon Mega Man obtains by defeating Sword Man in Mega Man 8. Befitting its name, it is a close-ranged fire-based weapon, capable of igniting things that are highly flammable, such as the "Thorn Vines" in Search Man's stage. Flame Sword can be executed on the ground and in the air, and even underwater. On the ground, Mega Man will perform a horizontal outward slash, and in the air, he will perform a downward slash. It has short range, but it's effective against bosses and deals high damage to many of them. It's Search Man's weakness, as it can burn down the bushes he hides behind and sets him on fire, preventing him from ever using his Homing Sniper, and it's also Frost Man's secondary weakness.

The Flame Sword is an effective weapon against Dr. Wily's Wily Machine 8 and the weakness of its second form, the Wily Capsule Great, alongside the Flash Bomb. The Flash Bomb hits multiple times, dealing the same damage of the Flame Sword per hit, but it doesn't have as many uses.

  • For Bliking, it is the only boss in Mega Man 8 to take a different amount of damage from each strike from the Flame Sword (3 units of damage the first strike; 2 the second time; 3, 2, 3, etc.), hence the data value in its field above is listed in fraction form.
  • Cut Man and Wood Man are available only in the Sega Saturn version of Mega Man 8.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Mega Man using Flame Sword in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Mega Man uses the Flame Sword in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as his forward air attack. This attack involves Mega Man quickly summoning the Flame Sword to his hand in midair (rather than morphing his hand into a Mega Buster that emits the blade), and performing a downward swing with it in front of him, much like when the move is used in midair in Mega Man 8. The attack inflicts 9% damage or 5% if the sword hits the opponent at the end of the move, and has a fire effect, true to its name.

Brawlhalla[]

Flame Sword is used in one of Mega Man's attacks.

Other media[]

Mega Man used the Flame Sword against the Wily Machine in the Rockman 8 manga. Instead of being made of flames, Mega Man's sword is identical to Sword Man's.

Trivia[]

  • Mega Man's voice in the background puts emphasis on the "W" in sword.
