"Sigma detected at supply relay point. Investigate."
—Stage description

The Gateway stage is a stage from Mega Man X8. It is a space station that orbits the Moon, and is used as a relay point between it and the Jakob Orbital Elevator. The Gateway is unlocked by completing the latter and its completion opens the former.

Description[]

X8 Gateway Sprite

Graphic of the Gateway exterior

After securing the Jakob Elevator, the Maverick Hunters detect Sigma's presence in the nearby Gateway and go to investigate. Inside, the Hunters face New Generation Reploids transformed into previously defeated Mavericks. After defeating the Mavericks, the room begins to self-destruct, forcing them towards the exit where they confront a Copy Sigma. They defeat it and return to Hunter Base, aware that the real Sigma is still out there.

Layout[]

The stage has eleven rooms.

Starting Area[]

This is where X and his comrades start their mission. The room is a simple rectangular room with not many visible features at first. After the Boss Rush, the station starts to collapse, forcing the Maverick Hunters to retreat here at which point a Copy Sigma attacks them, triggering a battle against him. The floor is also set on fire halfway through the battle, although the flames go out upon defeating the Copy Sigma.

Hallway[]

In order to get to the Boss Rush chamber, X and company have to head through this hallway. There are no enemies in this section, but during the room trip to the starting room after the Boss Rush, the floor tiles will lose their structural integrity and the Maverick Hunters have to outrun the resultant hole in order to escape.

Boss Rush Chamber[]

This is a room with eight teleportation capsules that lead to different rooms where the eight Maverick bosses make their return. After they are defeated, the room begins to collapse. The capsules will telegraph which Maverick boss their respective room contains via their colour (Burn Rooster is fought in the room that is accessed through the red teleporter, Gigabolt Man-O-War is accessed through a light blue teleporter, a green teleporter leads to Bamboo Pandamonium's room, Gravity Antonion is accessed through a magenta teleporter, Optic Sunflower is accessed through a yellow teleporter, Earthrock Trilobyte is accessed through an orange teleporter, the black teleporter leads to Dark Mantis' room, and Avalanche Yeti is rematched in the room accessed through a white teleporter.), and will shut off after they are used.

Boss Rematch Rooms[]

These rooms hold the battlefields where the Maverick bosses are faced again. The rooms have a window that gives players a view of the outside in their background, and their terrain consists of metal floors and walls. They also have layouts that resemble the areas that the Mavericks were originally fought in. After a Maverick Hunter defeats the Maverick in a room, they will be forced out of the room and cannot access that room until the player returns to the stage. The rooms have the following layouts:

  • The room in which Burn Rooster has his rematch has metal columns comprising the floor that rise up and down at certain points during the battle. Unlike in Burn Rooster's stage, the room doesn't flood with lava upon Burn Rooster's defeat.
  • Gigabolt Man-O-War is fought in a room that has a single platform upon which his rematch takes place, simulating his original arena in which the Hunters were on a floating platform in the Dynasty stage.
  • Bamboo Pandamonium is fought in a wide room that has invisible walls that X and company cannot stick too, making wall-jumps impossible except off the spears that Bamboo Pandamonium summons. During his intro animation here, Bamboo Pandamonium simply walks through said wall.
  • Gravity Antonion, Optic Sunflower, Earthrock Trilobyte, and Dark Mantis have their rematches in enclosed rooms that look like the Starting Room except there are no doors and the properties may be different. Gravity Antonion is able to rotate his room's gravity, Optic Sunflower can create and manipulate temporary platforms in his room, and Dark Mantis has his rematch in a room whose lighting wavers. Earthrock Trilobyte has no special hazards in his own room.
  • Avalanche Yeti is fought in a wide room that has snow on the floor to conceal his body during his Ice Dragon Rise attack. The room has no visible ceiling.

Trivia[]
