Kougenjin (光幻刃 "Light Illusion Blade") is the EX Skill that Zero obtains by defeating Sage Harpuia with an A or S rank in Mega Man Zero 2. With it, Zero releases a short-ranged shockwave from the Z Saber.
The Kougenjin has a property where it can be used during the Z-Saber's three slash combo to replace one of its attacks and continue afterwards.
Description[]
In Mega Man Zero 2, Kougenjin is far more useful in stages than against bosses. It can be chained during a combo to do a longer range attack than usual without stopping the combo. Against bosses, it is very weak as it has a hit priority of 1, meaning it can only be used as a combo starter against bosses. At close range it does 5 damage as opposed to the 4 damage of a regular saber attack and the 3 that the wave itself does. This slight damage boost can make it a straight upgrade from the saber if the player is using the X, Erase, Active, Power and Proto Forms, which limit Zero's Z-saber combo to 1 slow slash.
Similar skills[]
Kougenjin appears in Mega Man Zero 3 and Mega Man Zero 4 as an alternate third slash in the Z Saber's combo with the same command, obtained from the Cyber-elf Cottus in Zero 3 and Croire's Level 4 and 7 hacker skills in Zero 4, though it is unnamed, being referred to as an "attack wave" in Zero 4. This attack gives more horizontal range but less vertical range, as opposed to the rise slash's vertical range, and has a hit priority of 3, making it more useful in combos. In Mega Man Zero 4 it is also colored blue and much taller, resembling Ice Blade visually due to the Ice Blade's colors overwriting those used for the attack wave.
This EX Skill is used as a base for the Throw Blade and Ice Blade EX Skills in Mega Man Zero 3 and Mega Man Zero 4 respectively, with "Down + Attack" used to send out a short ranged attack from the Z Saber.
In Mega Man ZX, with Model OX in O.I.S (Overdrive Invoke System) mode, by holding down and pressing the main weapon button, the user will do Shinkuujin, a thunder-element attack similar to Kougenjin.

Trivia[]
- Kougenjin is the only EX Skill that has a different element from the boss. It comes from Sage Harpuia, but is not Thunder element. In fact, Kougenjin is the only skill of its kind that has no element.
