Mega Man?, known as Rockman? (ロックマン？) in Japan, is a boss from Mega Man Powered Up that the player faces when playing with a Robot Master on his own stage. He is not the real Mega Man, but rather a robot created by Dr. Wily to impersonate him. His appearance is similar to the original blue bomber, but wears a purple scarf, much like Proto Man's yellow scarf. He also has a triangle on his helmet instead of a square, and has a more hostile expression on his face. He also inherits the real Mega Man's Mega Buster, though his shots are green instead of yellow (normal shots) or blue (charge shots).
In the dialogue exchange between the player Robot Master and Mega Man?, he tries to pass himself off as the real Mega Man and convince them to join up with Dr. Wily, frequently using lingo or terms appealing to the particular Robot Master, only for his plan to quickly backfire and having to resort to eliminating them. Most of the Robot Masters see through his facade (notably with Elec Man, Time Man and Oil Man directly seeing through it), though Cut Man seems to be naive enough to believe that Mega Man? is the real Mega Man, to the point the boss has to explain Cut Man he is not the real one (though Cut Man still does not take the bait to join Dr. Wily).
Mega Man?'s attack scheme is somewhat unpredictable, but easy to avoid. He can shoot three buster shots at a time, which can be avoided at close range by jumping over Mega Man? to the opposite side he is running towards, or at long range by jumping above the shots and then over him. Mega Man? will also jump sometimes. In Normal and Hard difficulties, he will also attack by sliding; this is easily avoided by jumping above him, though he will sometimes turn around to use this move repetitively. After losing half of his health on Normal mode (or at any time in Hard mode), he will also use a charged shot as his special attack. Like all Robot Masters, he is invulnerable during the duration of his special attack while charging his shot, and for a brief moment after he fires. He always fires a single regular shot before he begins charging the special attack. It can be avoided by jumping over it. In Normal difficulty, Mega Man? will stand still while charging while in Hard difficulty he will still move around while charging his shot.
Mega Man? has no real weaknesses, as he takes the same damage from almost all of the Robot Masters' special weapons. However, Oil Man must crash into him with the Oil Slider to cause the same damage as the other Robot Masters, which is risky due to him moving constantly around the room. Otherwise, the oil blob deals minimal damage. Time Man cannot directly damage Mega Man? with the Time Slow, but makes his attacks easier to avoid; the clock hands he fires will cause actual damage to Mega Man?.
Mega Man Powered Up Dialogues
Mega Man?: Cutman! I've joined up with Dr. Wily. What about you? Want a cut of the action?
Cut Man: M-Mr. Mega Man?! D-Did you really?! It's not true! It's not true!
Mega Man?: Not the sharpest pair in the drawer, huh?... Did you really think I was the real one?
Mega Man?: Gutsman, I just signed with Dr. Wily. Wanna join our project?
Guts Man: The Doc ain't just my Pops, he's much more than that. So I gotta turn your project down.
Mega Man?: Whatever, hard-head. Never had much hope for you anyway.
Mega Man?: Enlisting with Dr. Wily is the way to go, Iceman. How about it? I just signed up.
Ice Man: And, who might you be, soldier? Have we met before?
Mega Man?: Hmmm... Just as he looks, he's one cool customer... Too bad he figured me out. Better get going!
Mega Man?: Dr. Wily's a blast, Bombman. Come join our party!
Bomb Man: Uh, Mega Man, you been out in the sun too much?
Mega Man?: So, I guess your answer is no? Then I'm gonna have to make you blow up like one of your bombs!
Mega Man?: You should come with me, Fireman. Dr. Wily really knows how to cook the bad guys!
Fire Man: You sure you have a strong sense of justice?! Mine burns strong in my heart!
Mega Man?: What a hothead.
Mega Man?: I just joined Dr. Wily. He's quite shocking, so why not join, too? You'd like him.
Elec Man: Humph, who in the world are you? Mega Man's eyes are not clouded like a thunderstorm...
Mega Man?: Darn, he figured it out. Time to bolt and change strategies.
Mega Man?: Hey, Timeman. Think you can fit Dr. Wily into your schedule?
Time Man: *unimpressed* Who are you?
Mega Man?: I think he's onto me. Must be because I seem so much smarter than the real one.
Mega Man?: Oilman! Bro! Dr. Wily's got some slick jobs with your name on 'em, so how about it?
Oil Man: Ha, ha. Real funny. If you're Mega Man, then I'm Dr. Light!
Mega Man?: Guess our oily plan just burned up in my face. Better take this guy down!
In Archie's Mega Man comic series, Dr. Wily managed to gain control over Mega Man in The Return of Dr. Wily story arc by making sure a virus is passed to him when he copied the Special Weapons from the eight Robot Masters of Mega Man 2. After being repaired by Wily, the appearance of the corrupted Mega Man resembles Mega Man?. Dr. Light managed to partially install an antivirus into Mega Man before he was taken by Wily, and Light's Robot Masters invade the Wily Castle to finish the installation and make him return to normal.
Except for his first appearance, Copy Robot wears a purple scarf, making his look similar to Mega Man?.
- Mega Man? could possibly be related to Copy Robot in several ways.
- Both are loaded with Mega Man's data; evidence of this is Mega Man? and Copy Robot having the same voice clips.
- Dr. Light's robots' health meters feature an avatar of their faces when they are both playable characters and bosses, but Mega Man?'s health meter has a "W", like the fortress bosses (Copy Robot being one of them).
- Like Copy Robot, Mega Man? explodes into energy spheres when he is defeated (though they are colored green instead of blue).
- This is the only boss in the game who cannot be faced by Mega Man himself, Roll, or Proto Man.
