This article is about the DOS game titled Mega Man. For the first game on the NES, see Mega Man. |
Mega Man, also called Megaman,[1] is a game in the original Mega Man series licensed by Capcom USA and developed by Hi-Tech Expression in association with Rozner Labs for DOS, released in the US only in 1990. It was followed by its own sequel, titled Mega Man 3: The Robots are Revolting also for DOS, despite there not being any Mega Man 2.
While likely coincidental, the game featured some elements that would later be used by games developed by Capcom themselves, being the first game with an opening stage and the first game where the player character can jump through or fall through platforms to get through others.
The game features no music. Due to Stephen Rozner not having access to Mega Man assets, the sprites are inferior, though the graphics, from a technical standpoint, are superior to the NES version in EGA or VGA mode.
Story[]
From the game box:
"Break the death-grip of the ultimate computer!"
As Mega Man, the robot wunderkind created to save the world, match your mettle against the mind of Dr. Wily, a megalomaniac with the hardware to match his ego! Search Wily's mechano-botic complex, from its mind-bending maze of electrified corridors, through giant whirling turbines and into paralyzing force fields.
You must find the three keys into the core room! Leap pools of supercharged gunk. Pulverize ion-sucking Batimms and other insidious insectobots. Face a phalanx of slithering, seething cyborgs, all programmed to turn you into radioactive waste! At last, confront CRORQ, a megacomputer revived by the psychotic calculations of Wily's mad brain.
Survive and challenge the mastermind behind the superbrain, Dr. Wily himself!"
Enemies[]
Mega Man features animal and insect based enemies that appear more organic than robotic, as well as two enemies from the franchise, the Met and Sniper Joe.
While the guard dog enemy in the intro stage can be defeated, it will immediately respawn and is not easily outrun. The best option is to run away from it, jumping away from it when it pounces, until one reaches the door.
Unlike most other games, Mega Man only features three Robot Masters. Mega Man: The Wily Wars's Wily Tower mode also features three bosses in the way of the Genesis Unit, though it is not a sperate game.

Trivia[]
- The game's box art is a combination of Mega Man 3 and Mega Man Dr. Wily's Revenge box art: Dr. Wily's Revenge uses the same image of Mega Man as Mega Man 3's box art against a different background, which is used by Mega Man on DOS while adding in Rush and Spark Man from 3's box art. Spark Man was added in due to his resemblance to Bit Man, while Rush was likely kept in as he resembled the guard dog enemy from the intro stage. Rush is also moved to the left of Mega Man in the art, rather than being directly behind him like he is on 3's art.
- When Mega Man uses a Robot Master's weapon, he does not change color.
- As with many other Mega Man games from when the series first began, Dr. Wily's name is misspelled as Dr. Wiley.
- The brick wall, wooden box and nuke graphics were reused in Duke Nukem. [Citation needed]
- The game is, from a technical standpoint, impressive in that it has much better scrolling than contemporary PC games. It is also very well optimized, as it can run at high framerates even on a 286 with VGA graphics. Unfortunately it doesn't have a properly locked speed, so the game runs too fast on later CPUs.
- There is a cheat code to become invincible in the game, at the initial setup menu press and release "N" on the keyboard then press and release "D" on the keyboard, after that select "game start" and no enemy can hurt you. [Verification needed]
