The untitled Mega Man movie is a planned film based off the Mega Man franchise, to be produced by Chernin Entertainment. The film, first rumored by the Hollywood insider site The Tracking Board in September 2015 and officially announced in October 2018, is planned to be a live-action adaptation.[1][2]

Background

On 17 December 2014, the 20th Century Fox filed a registration notice for the domain name "megaman-movie.com."[3]

On 2 September 2015, the Hollywood insider website The Tracking Board announced that 20th Century Fox had secured the rights to produce a Mega Man movie adaptation. The film will be produced by Peter Chernin through Chernin Entertainment, with oversight by David Ready and Michael Finfer. Oversight by Fox will be handled by Mike Ireland and Ryan Horrigan.[1]

On 19 July 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the screenwriting team of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, known for directing Catfish, were in final discussions for writing and directing Mega Man, and that Heroes actor Masi Oka was attached as co-producer.[4]

On August 6, 2019, Disney, who acquired 20th Century Fox nearly five months prior, announced a change in release strategy for the Fox brand involving more direct control from Walt Disney Studios over what films would be green-lit, resulting in almost all Fox films not attached to a release date being shelved indefinitely.[5][6] Despite this, on October 30, 2019, Capcom revealed that the film is still in development.[7][8]

On 17 January 2020, Chernin parted ways with Disney, resulting in Disney leaving production.[9] On 22 January 2020, it was reported that Mattson Tomlin would be penning the script for the video game to film adaptation. It's currently unknown whether Tomlin will be either replacing or teaming up with Ariel Schulman, who was previously announced as the film's writer in 2018. Nothing has been officially announced on this front, however.[10]
