Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, known as Rockman EXE Advanced Collection [2] (ロックマンエグゼ アドバンスドコレクション Rokkuman Eguze Adobansudo Korekushon) in Japan, is the sixth game in the Mega Man Legacy Collection series. This compilation includes all six mainline Mega Man Battle Network series games (including both versions of each game from the third game beyond) with additional content and features. It was officially announced on June 28, 2022 and was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam on April 14, 2023. [3] The collection was split into two volumes, which are bought separately or in a bundle purchase digitally (with only the latter available for pre-order), as well as a physical release containing the data for both volumes together.[3]

The collection includes online battling and Battle Chip trading.

Games[]

All six numbered Mega Man Battle Network games from the Game Boy Advance are included, split into two volumes which can be bought separately or as a bundle pack digitally (though the separate volumes are only available after the games' release), however the physical version will include both volumes on the same disc/cartridge.[3] The games were released separately to make them more affordable for the public and to improve the performance of the servers for online mode, making it faster to find a match.[4] To switch between games that have a separate version, the ▢ (PS4), Y (NS), and X (Steam) buttons must be pressed when highlighting that game.

Extras[]

  • A main menu for selecting the games with MegaMan as menu navigator. Pressing a button can make him do a unique action, and another button will allow Silent Mode. MegaMan is voiced by returning voice actors who voiced him in the MegaMan NT Warrior anime. This feature can be turned on/off at any time
  • The high resolution filter from Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 returns, and also updates the font.
  • An Art Gallery with "Mystery Data" collects over 1,000 pieces of art.
  • A Music Player with 188 songs from across the series is included.
  • Online features which will allow for local or online battling, via that Private or Public matches which can increase a player's rank.[3] with Ω (Omega) being the highest rank.[5] This system makes it possible for players to face those of the same rank, though the player's actions will determine on a rank increase/decrease.[5]
    • A time limit has been added for selecting chips in the Custom Screen.
    • For the purpose of balanced competitive play several features were changed for online battles:
      • The TreeBomb Prism combo from Mega Man Battle Network 2 had been readjusted for online play for gameplay balance by making it work like it does in Mega Man Battle Network 3.[4]
      • Buster MAX mode is unavailable for Online battle.[6]
      • The All Guard 1/2 and All Guard 2/2 patch cards are prevented from being used in Online Battle.[5]
    • TriBattle in Mega Man Battle Network 3 and Tournament mode to boosts Red Sun and Blue Moon chips in Mega Man Battle Network 4.
    • An option is available to turn the Patch cards On/Off.[6]
  • Trade system for several gameplay features:[3]
    • The ability to trade the Battle Chips between games.
    • The ability of being able to trade Style Changes in Mega Man Battle Network 2.
    • Program Trade, the ability to trade Navi Customizer programs between players in Mega Man Battle Network 3 to 6.
    • Trade Navis with the Waiting Room feature in Mega Man Battle Network 4. Opens Free Tournament to get exclusive Secret chips and access to opposite version Navis in story tournaments.
    • Trade Folders in Mega Man Battle Network 6.
  • Compare data for several gameplay features:[3]
    • The ability to compare Data Libraries between players in Mega Man Battle Network 3 to 6. This will enter the chip names and make them available for Chip Order.
    • The ability to compare Omega and SP delete time records in Mega Man Battle Network 4 to 6.
  • Similar to Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection, pre-order bonuses are available in the form of four pre-arranged music tracks (2 per volume) and special skins for MegaMan.EXE when launching that volume, namely Hub Style in Volume 1, and Dark MegaMan.EXE in Volume 2.[3] This DLC was made available for individual purchase which started on June 27, 2023 for $1.99 per volume.[7][8]
  • Like with past collections background frames are available, with each volume having ten different frames, with the ones available depending on Volume that can be used for all individual games.

Version differences[]

  • Unlike the original English release, the new English release for this collection has this game based off the Japanese version, but with an English translation for the new release, allowing the previous features omitted from the international release to be restored.[3] The English text is taken directly from the original GBA releases, while there are a few text fixes, many of the original typos and mistranslations are completely intact.
    • On the other hand, many typos and mistakes in the Japanese text from the original GBA releases have been fixed.
  • Several features that were originally downloaded to the game directly from collectibles that were distributed only in Japan, are now obtainable through a free download and are available outside of Japan for the first time.
    • The ability to download all 15 battle chips that were event-exclusive in Japan from the original release, such as the Bass Battle Chip from the first Mega Man Battle Network. However, these special battle chips cannot be re-obtained if the player loses that chip, as each of these special chips can only be downloaded once per save file.[3]
    • The Modification cards from the Nintendo e-Reader, now known as Patch cards, can be enabled for the games in the second collection with pictures of the original cards with an English summary similarly to how the e-Reader card functions were added to Mega Man Zero Collection and Zero/ZX Legacy Collection for Mega Man Zero 3. Matchmaking filters for this are also implemented as an option.[6]
      • The Z-Saber is included as a special card, but it can only be downloaded once per save file.[5]
      • Unlike the aforementioned collections, the Patch Cards in this game are available right away, instead of having to be unlocked first.
  • "Buster MAX Mode" is a new feature that can be used for all six main games. This multiplies the Mega Buster shot damage by 100, allowing for a more casual gameplay experience.[6]
    • This comes with a few limitations: It only applies to non-charged shots, and only when no Patch cards for increasing power are in use, and the clear times for defeated enemy Navis are not updated in Mega Man Battle Network 3 and the games in the second collection.[5]
  • Retro chip traders are absent in Battle Network 2, with all mentions of it being replaced with new dialogue.
  • The Dark Soul Unison for Battle Network 4 and 5 has been slightly modified where if the amount of Dark Chips is unbalanced, then regular Battle Chips will be used as well.[5]
  • The Boktai material is available for the games in the second collection, which is also available for the first time in Battle Network 6 outside of Japan, but only the story material, Battle Chips and Patch cards are available, with Crossover Battles not being possible to implement.[5]
    • As a result, this is the only part of the collection that has new dialogue available for the English version.
  • AquaMan.EXE retains his name in the new English release of Battle Network 6. In the original release he was renamed as "SpoutMan.EXE". As a result, Aqua Cross now remains unchanged in the English version.
  • The Legacy Collection starts with a disclaimer that the content of the game is preserved for authenticity of the time period it was made. Despite this, some content has been altered within the games for all regions. This includes the modification of the red cross symbol in areas and characters into another color, some examples include Spooky's red to green and Tango's red to blue. Also, the names for Nation R (not mentioned in the English game) and Nation Z have been changed into Nation M and Nation X respectively.
  • Although some glitches from the original GBA releases are fixed, many still remain. Additionally, bug fixes from the international GBA versions of game are not present and in some cases, are fixed differently.

Voice Cast[]

The voice cast features returning actors of the MegaMan NT Warrior anime from the Japanese, North American English, and Taiwan Chinese dubs.[9]

Voice Acting

Achievements[]

Continuing from the tradition since the dual release of X Legacy Collection 1 & 2, the achievements are listed in their own section in the collection as "Trophy". However, only the PlayStation 4 and Steam versions will allow the player to earn trophies/achievement points for completing these achievements with a Platinum trophy also included for the former.

Development notes[]

  • Development of the Battle Network Legacy Collection took about 2 years. Director Masakazu Eguchi said there was a push within the company to reissue the games. The outcry, especially during the 20th anniversary of the series, made the project a reality.[10] Apparently the biggest boost was from staff requests on the non-development side.[11]
  • Director Eguchi notes that he wanted to included more voices in reference to the Hub Style and Dark MegaMan 3D skins, but was unable to due to "adults reasons".[4]
  • The first 2 MMBN games' development were still using paper and floppy disks, which data got lost over time. The staff reproduced the lost data by using what they remember and asking the original game staff, as only digging into the game data was still difficult to them when it came to recreating and fixing game behavior.[10]

Trivia[]

  • In Japan, Rockman EXE Advanced Collection won a CESA Game Awards 2022 Future for excellence, which are given to anticipated non-released works[12].
    • In addition, it sold over 65,000 copies in Japan during its first three days[13] and over 1 Million copies globally within two weeks[14][15], making it the fastest selling title in the Battle Network series and the entire Mega Man franchise.
Masakazu Eguchi - Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Wins "Future Division" Award at TGS 2022

Eguchi receiving the "Future Division" award at the Japan Game Awards 2022 event for the Rockman EXE Advanced Collection.[16]

  • This is the first game from the Mega Man Legacy Collection series not to be released on Xbox consoles.
  • This is the second Mega Man series release that was released on non-Nintendo platforms for the first time and were also originally games from a handheld console after Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection.
  • This collection marks the first time any Battle Network game was officially localized into Chinese. It was also the first Legacy Collection game to have a full Chinese language localization.
  • The website calls the game a "Data Action RPG"[1], a returning terminology from the Japanese games. This is also a parallel to the Mega Man Star Force games, where the Japanese version calls its genre "Brother Action RPG".
  • The phrase "Even now, we're still connected!" (いまでもボクらは、つながっている! Ima demo boku-ra wa, tsunagatte iru!) from the first trailer is a throwback to the Japanese slogan of the original Mega Man Battle Network: "No matter what, we're always connected." (いつでもボクらは、つながっている。 Ittsu demo boku-ra wa, tsunagatte iru), which appeared in printed ads and the animated commercial. The latter is used as the English localized Legacy Collection slogan.
  • The game was announced at June 28, 2022; this day is also the birthday of Akiko Kimura, MegaMan.EXE's voice actress.
  • The game's release date is April 14, the same date X's capsule was open in The Journal of Dr. Cain.
  • The North American release of the collection has an ESRB rating of "E+10", an increase from the original games' ESRB ratings of "E". The Ratings Summary for the games considered these aspects in determining the E+10 rating:
    • Volume 1: "The game contains some suggestive material in the dialogue (e.g., “Stop peeking! You Pervert”; "Her measurements are 33,22,33”; “You missed out on seeing [her] naked.”). Some sequences depict animal droppings on the ground, with accompanying dialogue (e.g., "[T]he smell here is too much”; “Phew, why did he have to go here?”). Players can encounter drunken characters (e.g., *hic* in their speech); one mission objective requires players' character to obtain whiskey. Gallery artwork depicts a character with a cigarette in his mouth. The words “damn” and “hell” appear in the game."[17]
    • Volume 2: "In one sequence, a character drinks rice wine and acts drunk (e.g., hiccuping), as characters remark (e.g., “I wonder who'd have won if [she] wasn't drunk.”). A handful of gallery images depict a robot smoking a pipe."[18]
  • Buster MAX Mode is the first collection-based gameplay feature since the Super Armor of Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 that the player can use freely without it affecting their ability to collect trophies/achievements.
  • As a result of the extra gameplay feature being limited to online connectivity, there is no general special gameplay mode available in the Battle Network Legacy Collection unlike the past Legacy Collection releases.
  • Despite Buster MAX Mode ignoring most patch card effects that modify MegaMan's charge shot, it affects the triple-buster shot from the Bass Cross MegaMan Patch Card as the shot does not require the player to hold down the buster attack button to execute it (Shooting Buster & Helz Rolling are still not affected by this mode).
