Mega Man with the Numbers from the first two Mega Man games.
| For the virus from Mega Man Battle Network 3, see Number. |
The Numbers (ナンバーズ Nanbāzu) are a series of human-like robots featured in the original Mega Man series.[1][2][3] They are mostly the creations of the scientists Thomas Light and Albert Wily, with the term Numbers being coined by the former,[3] while the latter used Dr. Light's creations as the base for his own Numbers.[2]
Profile[]
The Numbers are special robots with a model number that is numbered by order of creation,[1] listed in formats such as DWN-010, DWN010, or D.W.N.010. In most games, they are displayed on a Stage Select Screen and the player obtains a Special Weapon after defeating each one, and all present must be defeated in order to open the last stages.
The original Numbers are the precursors to the more advanced robots seen in later series such as Reploids.
The name of the Numbers have alternate spelling depending of the source, some having space between the first part of their name and "Man", and others not. For example, in Mega Man: Powered Up, Mega Man is the only to have his name separate, while the Numbers have no space. The reverse is true in the English Mega Man & Bass database. In Japan, Numbers are typically romanized with the "M" in "Man" in lowercase and having no space, such as Elecman, but also have exceptions, like the staff roll from Rockman 11. For consistency, the names of all Numbers are written with space on this wiki, as it is the most used transcription outside Japan.
Design[]
Numbers generally have a theme that fit their name, appearance, weapon, weakness, environment, and minions. For example, Wood Man has a tree theme, giving him a wood-like appearance and a leaf-based power. His stage is forest-themed, as are his robot underlings, and, like a tree, he is weak to fire and cutting attacks. Dr. Light believes it is important that his robots have a good image to present. For example, he could have done Guts Man smaller, but decided to make him as he did to give a good impression.[3]
Numbers often share traits such as having "Man" or "Woman" in their name, using a Special Weapon, and having an assigned model number consisting of a two-letter "series code" followed by one of "N", "No.", or "#", then a three-digit number.[3] Like all robots, Numbers have an integrated circuit with a "cognitive circuit". As long as the cognitive circuit isn't permanently destroyed, they can be rebuilt any number of times.[4]
Some designs may vary in other media. For example, in Hitoshi Ariga's Mega Man Megamix manga, a recurring design element found on most of the Wily Numbers is a belt buckle adorned with a W. Opposite this, the Light Numbers feature an R (due to the translation of Dr. Light's name from Dr. Right) on their chests. Dr. Cossack's robots and the robots of Mega Man 6 lack any particular distinctive symbols of their own.
Air Man type[]
"Air Man type" is a general term for humanoid robots with unique forms that aren't fully humanoid. They tend to instill fear in their opponents.[5] The term comes from Air Man, whose design became more popular after his creation, with several Wily Numbers after him being modeled with their torso and head being one piece. This design was also used by Dr. Light and other scientists in creations like Toad Man and Magma Man.
Mental capacity[]
- See also: Artificial intelligence
Numbers are programmed with humanlike intelligence and personalities, being able to converse with others and each other as if they were human, and can have quirks such as accents, multiple personalities, laziness, anger issues, and more.[3]
They are bound by the Three Laws of Robotics and are unable to harm humans, however, they have been shown to have varying degrees of self-awareness, and several characters have been shown going against their inherent programming to do what they believe is best in the situation they are in, rather than what their programming tells them to do; this has led many of the Wily Numbers to defy Wily on several occasions with Bass being a prime example having fought alongside his rival Mega Man against Wily a few times.
Robot Masters[]

In English speaking countries, the Numbers have most commonly been known and referred to as Robot Masters due to early English material referring to the bosses on the Stage Select Screen as such.[6][7] In the first game's English manual they were instead called "Humanoids" (a name later used for different characters in the Mega Man ZX series), and they were also referred as "Robot Leaders" in the NES Game Atlas.
This term has sparsely been used in Japan, with the Numbers being most commonly given generic titles such as boss characters (ボスキャラ) in those instances.[8][9][10] In Japanese media, the term has only been used in the Elec Man Mix track in 20th Anniversary Rockman 1~6 Techno Arrange Version, which states that the term "Robot Master" comes from the fact that these robots are able to supervise other less intelligent machines. This is the only instance of the term being used in official Japanese media, due to using an almost verbatim copy of Mega Man's history in Wikipedia's article at the time. Staff at Capcom are aware of the term, using it in making-of videos for Mega Man 11, but never in official content.[11]
The term Robot Master has also been used in other media, such as the Archie Comics Mega Man series and in Mega Man: Fully Charged.[12][13]
Some English media also refers to them as Numbers, most notably the manga Mega Man Megamix.
List of Numbers[]
Below is a list of the various Numbers from the classic Mega Man series:
DLN and DWN series[]

The DLN (Doctor Light Number) series are robots created by Dr. Light. This series is known as the DRN series in Japan, after Dr. Light's Japanese name, Dr. Right.

The DWN (Doctor Wily Number) series are robots created or remodeled by Dr. Wily. Their numbering picks up from where the DLN series from the first Mega Man left off.[2]
All Wily Numbers from Mega Man 2 to 7, and six of the Numbers from Mega Man 8, were created as part of boss character contests held by Capcom.
003-008 (Mega Man and Mega Man Powered Up)[]
The six (eight in Mega Man Powered Up) Numbers that appear as bosses in Mega Man and Mega Man Powered Up are a set of industrial robots created by Dr. Light (with the assistance of Dr. Wily in some sources) so that they could become the cornerstone of robots that voluntarily help people and can coexist with humans. However, they were stolen and modified by Dr. Wily to serve his evil purposes, which led Dr. Light's robotic lab assistant, Rock, to request him to convert him into a fighting robot so that he could stop them, thus becoming Mega Man and going to fight for the first time. After Wily's defeat, Dr. Light manages to fix them and they serve their initial functions.[3]
While DLN. 000 Proto Man, DLN. 001 Mega Man, and DLN. 002 Roll are part of the Dr. Light Numbers, they are not part of the collective term Numbers, which is primarily used for Stage Select bosses.[2] This may also be due to them being a prototype and two assistant robots, as Dr. Light only refered to his industrial robots as the Numbers.[3]
The term Numbers was not mentioned in materials related to Mega Man Powered Up, and Time Man and Oil Man were not given a model number. Early promotional flyers listed Oil Man as DLN-009 and Time Man as DLN-010, though these numbers have never been repeated.[14] In the second story arc of Archie Comics' Mega Man comic book series, Time Man is referred as DLN-00A and Oil Man as DLN-00B, which is an experimental line-up.

017-024 (Mega Man 3)[]

The robots from Mega Man 3 were created by Dr. Wily and Dr. Light together (save for Shadow Man),[15] but they are still listed as part of the DWN series due to Wily hijacking them. The Mega Man: Official Complete Works shows artwork of an RW logo, suggesting they planned to make apparent the doctors' cooperative effort in the game. Moreover, this logo can be seen in Magnet Man's stage.
In early versions of the manga Mega Man Megamix, these robots were known as the DRWN series (Doctor Right and Wily Numbers), but were later changed to be robots developed solely by Dr. Wily.[16]
In the Archie Comics series, Ra Moon serves as the initial creator of these Robot Masters, who are based on the designs of Dr. Wily and Dr. Light instead of being built by them, the exception being Shadow Man who was found in Ra Moon's ruins and reactivated. However, it was stated that Wily redesigned Shadow Man before having Ra Moon restore him, so his upgraded form may also have been conceived by both doctors.[17]
| Number | Name | Special Weapon |

025-032 (Mega Man 4)[]

The Wily Numbers from Mega Man 4 were created by Dr. Cossack, but are listed as part of the DWN series because Wily modified and reprogrammed them as his combat robots.[18] Most of them are industrial robots, much like the Numbers created by Dr. Light, but two of them, Ring Man and Skull Man, were specifically designed for combat and with the purpose of destroying Mega Man. Due to Dr. Wily blackmailing Dr. Cossack by kidnapping his daughter Kalinka and using her as a hostage, he sent the Numbers to fight Mega Man and take over the world.
In the manga Mega Man Megamix, the Global Robotics Union registered the eight robots (seven industrial robots and one combat robot) created by Dr. Cossack as DWN robots, being their official designation due to the fact that they fought on Dr. Wily's side during his plan to conquer the world, but they are also refered by the term Dr. Cossack Numbers (DCN) to show that they are in fact Dr. Cossack's robots.

These Wily Numbers were used to frame Proto Man in an attempt to take over the world, being led by a fake Proto Man.
In the Mega Man Megamix manga series, after a failed attempt at world domination with this particular group of Numbers, they are often used by Wily for more menial tasks, such as working part-time jobs to fund his operations or secretly acting as a pedal-powered energy source for Napalm Man's vehicle in the Battle & Chase competition.

041-048 (Mega Man 6)[]
These robots' creators are unknown as they came from various countries from around the world to participate in the First Annual Robot Tournament. However, they were reprogrammed by Dr. Wily (disguised as Mr. X) and, like Dr. Cossack's robots, are considered as part of the DWN series.
The Rockman 6 manga suggests that they were created by Dr. Wily, as he uses them as seed players to decide which robots would enter in the tournament, destroying all participants.
In the manga Mega Man Megamix the eight robots were created by World Robot Alliance (WRA) members and, similar Dr. Cossack's robots, were all registered by the WRA as DWNs, but are also known as the MXN (Mr. X Numbers) series.
In the Archie Comics, Plant Man's number is DAN-001, which stands for "Dr. Astil Number". DAN is also the acronym from the "Doctor Auto Numbers" in Mega Man Maniax and "Dr. Albert Numbers" in Mega Man ZX Advent.

In some sources related to Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, Enker is designated as a "Mega Man Hunter" instead of Mega Man Killer. Quint is not part of the MKN series, but serves an analogous role in Mega Man II and appears alongside them in Mega Man V.

The three are based on the characters of the Chinese novel Journey to the West. In some sources, like the Japanese Rockman & Forte database, their serials only have 2 numbers instead of three. Mega Man doesn't obtain a Special Weapon after defeating them.

Mega Man: Fully Charged[]
Robot Masters are a rogue faction of robots that strive for robot supremacy over humankind, and cause chaos in society while attempting to recruit others to their cause. They originally worked for Sergeant Breaker Night,[13][28] and later for Skull Man.
Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]
In the Archie Comics Mega Man series, Robot Masters are a new generation of robots with advanced A.I. systems created by Dr. Light and Dr. Wily.[12] Besides the Numbers from the games, the series also introduced new Robot Master characters, the first being Quake Woman, who is designated a "Lalinde Model Number" due to being created by Dr. Noele Lalinde. A second Lalinde Number was later introduced, based on an unused concept design for Hornet Man.
- LMN-001 Quake Woman
- LMN-002 Vesper Woman
In the comic, Robot Masters are numbered after the time of their conception, not of their creation.[19] For example, DWN-018 Magnet Man was finished before DWN-017 Needle Man, and several Robot Masters featured in other games, like Plant Man, Centaur Man, and Pump Man, are shown to have been constructed some time before the events based on Mega Man 3. Time Man and Oil Man received serial numbers not present in the games.
Roboticized Masters[]
During the Worlds Collide crossover with the Sonic the Hedgehog comic universe, Dr. Wily teamed up with Sonic's arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman, to capture Sonic's friends, and turn them into special robots that were modified with Robot Master technology. The Roboticized Masters are also given designations based on the typical formula, including EWN (presumably "Eggman Wily Number") and a three digit number. However, most of the EWN series did not have their numbers specified during the story, except for Shadow Man, Silver Man, and Blaze Woman. Rose Woman and Knuckles Man are mentioned to be EWN-001 and 002, and the Chaotix are EWN-006 to 008. Tails Man and Rouge Woman didn't had their numbers revealed, the numbers listed below being a "guess" as they were the first and last Roboticized Masters, respectively. In Worlds Unite, Sonic and Mega Man were transformed into Roboticized Masters.
| Number | Name | Special Weapon |
|---|---|---|
| "EWN-000" | Tails Man | Tail Wind |

These robots are led by the peacekeeping supercomputer CRORQ who had fallen under Dr. Wily's control. They appeared in the DOS games Mega Man and Mega Man 3. Four of the boss names from Mega Man 3 were later reused for other unrelated bosses in future games; those bosses are indicated with a dagger (†). Two of the other Mega Man 3 bosses had names that were later reused for Mega Man Battle Network NetNavis, and are marked with a double dagger (‡). Additionally, the name Sonic Man was used for Sonic's roboticized form in Worlds Unite.

Q. "The 8 bosses from Rockman 4, like Brightman and the others, were built by Dr. Cossack. So why are they considered to be Wily Numbers?"
