"Listen well, X. There are times when we Maverick Hunters cannot afford to hesitate in pulling the trigger. We must become both sword and shield to those who cannot protect themselves - that is our sworn duty. Never forget that!"
―Commander Sigma before his rebellion, The Day of Σ
"Come and get me, X! The time has come to prove your mettle against me. This fight will decide the fate of all Reploids! The battle may be over, but the war is just beginning!"
—Sigma, beginning his rebellion in the end of The Day of Σ
"It's not over yet, X! The battle! The angst! The destruction! I will make you understand the true potential of Reploids!"
―Sigma as a Maverick, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X

Sigma is the main antagonist of Mega Man Maverick Hunter X. A powerful Reploid who was originally the leader of the Maverick Hunters, Sigma betrayed them and humanity as the instigator of a mass Maverick rebellion.

Personality[]

Sigma was a level-headed and dauntless leader. He never hesitated to take action to achieve his goals, even if it risked the safety of others. He treated his subordinates in the 17th Elite Unit with some respect, but gave criticism liberally and only fought alongside them if absolutely required. Despite his strict personality, Sigma was esteemed by his fellow Hunters, and remained humble enough to seek advice from his creator, Dr. Cain. He also showed a compassionate side for the civilians he fought to protect, or at least an understanding of his role as a defender of the weak.

Upon his Maverick rebellion, Sigma unleashed his true passion as a revolutionary. He revealed a deep-seated misanthropy and pro-Reploid prejudice, believing human existence only inhibited Reploid greatness. His once-honorable determination escalated into murdering and manipulating others, such as X and Vile, to serve his interests. His emotions were unrestrained, often wearing an arrogant grin and laughing evilly as his twisted dreams progressed.

Sigma harbored an intense fascination with X. It is implied that Sigma was incapable of experiencing true empathy, unlike X, and he was captivated by this difference. He believed that X's nuanced emotions, such as hesitation and righteous indignation, made him more advanced than any other Reploid, even himself. Sigma was determined to prove this unlimited potential, and thus prove the future of Reploidkind, by putting him through a great deal of hardships. His rebellion was tailor-made to mold X into the revolutionary hero Sigma knew he could become.

History[]

The Day of Σ[]

Sigma, eager to put Reploid potential to "the ultimate test", hired hackers to hijack a Mechaniloid and attack a building. He led the 17th Elite Unit into combat, with Zero and Chill Penguin participating on the ground while X airdropped to strike the target from above. He supervised the operation with a degree of casualness, not intervening until the last second when he slashed through the Mechaniloid along with a Maverick Hunter being held in the way. Afterwards, Sigma criticized X for his hesitation to take the shot, and advised that there are moments where one cannot hesitate.

Sigma defeats the Mechaniloid with a decisive strike.

Sigma later met with Dr. Cain in his home to discuss the recent increase in Maverick activity, and X's progress as a Hunter. Sigma was confused when Dr. Cain described X's emotional nature as his greatest strength, but took these words to heart and made experimentation with X a part of his upcoming agenda.

Sigma remained distant from the investigations into the Maverick outbreaks, aware that getting too close could expose his involvement. Once his team of hijackers were located in Sector 16 East, he was forced to kill them to avoid being exposed. He returned to the scene of the crime during the Hunters' investigation, requesting an analysis from Zero before commanding Storm Eagle and Chill Penguin to search for the killer.

The next day, after a significant increase in Maverick activity, Sigma entered the brig where Vile was being held. He slaughtered the guards and released Vile, then reported his escape and ordered X and Zero to investigate. In his final move, Sigma headed to a missile base on the outskirts of Abel City, cutting off his radio.

X and Zero followed Sigma to the missile base, where he showed them data regarding the Maverick surge. He planned to attack them from behind, but was surprised when Zero expected his attack and countered it. Taking advantage of the situation, Sigma disarmed Zero and held him in front of himself, ordering X to shoot in order to stop him. X instead begged him to let Zero go, so he wounded Zero with his saber before seizing X and again forcing him to shoot to stop a missile launch aimed at Abel City. X, hopeless and confused, disarmed himself instead, amusing Sigma and allowing him to fire the missiles. X then rushed to stop Sigma, but he impaled him on his saber. Sigma was relieved at X's defeat, but the blue Hunter suddenly awoke again, focusing his power into his hand and striking Sigma across the face, scarring his eyes. Sigma prepared to fight X, only for him to deactivate. Impressed by this development that revealed X's true power, Sigma laughed aloud and let him live while departing to announce his rebellion.

Some time later, Sigma stood atop a building to observe the burning ruins of Abel City as his rebellion raged on. He challenged X to come face him, declaring that their battle would determine the fate of all Reploids.

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X[]

X Mode[]

With many Maverick Hunters following him to his rebellion, Sigma continued to wage war against the humans and what was left of the Hunters. His eight lieutenants wreaked global havoc, both to exterminate the humans and to goad X into fighting and becoming stronger.

Sigma finally met X again in the fourth area of the Sigma Palace, pleased to see how much the B-Class Hunter had developed. He sent his guard dog Velgaurder after him as an initial test, and congratulated X upon his victory. Sigma then faced him himself, and upon defeat, again voiced his approval of X's power. Following this, his head detached from his body and entered a giant battle body that filled the room, challenging X to fight one last time and unleash the true potential of Reploids. Sigma was defeated, just as expected, and was consumed in the explosion that filled the island. While he may have lost the battle, Sigma had successfully proved that X held unlimited potential.

Vile Mode[]

Sigma also appears in the non-canon Vile Mode. Sigma is shown jailbreaking Vile during The Day of Σ, explaining that he needed someone who could easily go Maverick in order to draw out X's potential. Unlike in X Mode, Vile moves independently from Sigma, declaring that he is the true key to Reploid evolution and targeting Sigma's eight generals to enhance his own strength.

Sigma discovers Vile, defeated.

Fascinated by Vile's conquest, Sigma invites the rogue to face him in his Sigma Palace. Ultimately, Vile is unable to get the chance to do so, since he is defeated by X and Zero during his infiltration. Sigma discovers Vile's broken body and questions him about his motivations. When Vile fails to give a direct answer, Sigma leaves him, although not before contacting some of his subordinates to retrieve him.

Strategy[]

Note: Some attack names are conjectural

First Form[]

Sigma retains his original Mega Man X counterpart's attacks, retaining his nimble agility and heavy-hitting damage output. He even retains his fairly simple combat pattern. However, in Hard Mode he gains an additional dive attack that can shake things up.

  • Beam Saber - Sigma rushes forwards and slashes once with his beam saber.
  • Triangle Kick - Sigma leaps from wall to wall in a triangular motion.
  • Machine Gun - Sigma fires five projectiles from his forehead.
  • Air Beam Saber - Sigma performs a diving stab attack with his saber if X is below him. Only in Hard Mode.

Wolf Sigma[]

The battle against Wolf Sigma has been slightly altered, using some new attacks. Notably, Wolf Sigma's claws are actually connected to its body by arms this time, making their movements more natural and clearly telegraphed. When Sigma uses Hand Shock, the lightning's hit box now covers the entire width of the paw, making it no longer possible to stand on the paw without taking damage from the lightning. Unlike the original Mega Man X, Wolf Sigma is also fully affected by the Hadoken.

  • Punch - Wolf Sigma punches at the floor with one of its claws.
  • Hand Shock - Wolf Sigma causes lightning to strike from the top and bottom of its claws.
  • Flamethrower - Wolf Sigma shoots a flamethrower from the mouth.
  • Lasers - Wolf Sigma shoots a laser out of its shoulder, causing lasers to sequentially rain down on the arena. Hiding under a claw can give X shelter.
  • Grapple - Wolf Sigma grabs at the middle of the room with a claw, potentially grabbing X and forcing the player to mash buttons to escape. Only in Hard Mode.
  • Electric Shock - Wolf Sigma charges up before shocking the middle of the arena with lightning, briefly electrifying the entire floor. Only in Hard Mode.

Cutscenes[]

  • "As far as his judgement and abilities on the battlefield is concerned, he has shown tremendous promise. However, he tends to hesitate when the situation calls for decisive action."
  • "I congratulate you on your detective skills, Zero. But it is X who deserves my admiration. His innocence is what makes him special, you see. He's an incredible Reploid specimen, wouldn't you agree?"
  • "You invited all of this upon yourself, X. Limitless potential and limitless danger both lie within you. Is this the end? Not at all. It is the beginning. The beginning of my new world!"
  • "Come and get me, X! The time has come to prove your mettle against me. This fight will decide the fate of all Reploids! The battle may be over, but the war is just beginning!"
  • "I see a new clarity in your eyes. You are no longer troubled."
  • "X... That look in your eyes makes me think you might be ready to face me. But why don't you try this on for size first!"
  • "Impressive, X... It looks like you really do have the potential I had seen in you. Our potential is limitless..."
  • "That's not what you really think."
  • "You say you believe in justice. But that's not true. You've only been lead to think that. Nothing more!"
  • "Magnificent, X! And to think you've been classified as a B-Class Hunter! Ha ha ha ha!"
  • "Mwah hah ha! Hah ha ha ha ha ha!"
  • "It's not over yet, X! The battle! The angst! The destruction! I will make you understand the true potential of Reploids!"
  • "I need your help... to defeat X."
  • "Yes. In order to ensure our future and speed along our evolution."
  • "His...worrying... That is precisely the quality that will prove beneficial to our cause. He alone possesses that ability. He thinks more deeply than the rest of us. He feels... normal Reploids are no match for his art. But... he is unaware of his incredible power."
  • "I won't force you; this isn't something most Reploids could do. I need someone who can go Maverick of their own accord."
  • "Vile... My supporters have been revolting across the land. What is your plan?"
  • "Vile... So this is your way of handling things?"
  • "Hm... Interesting... Why don't you come find me using your methods? I want to see you in action with my own eyes."
  • "What exactly did you plan to do, Vile? Would you stand before me as a Maverick Hunter? Kneel at my feet and place yourself at my mercy?"
  • "Retrieve Vile."

Trivia[]

  • There was a slight change in music prior to confronting Sigma upon defeating Velguarder. In the original game, Sigma, when appearing to confront X personally, had the pre-fortress boss music playing. In the remake, an entirely new tune was used for his interactions with X during this time.
    • On a similar note, in the original game, he warps out before the Velguarder fight only to return once Velguarder is destroyed. In the remake, he stays present in the background and watches the entire fight.
      • Additionally, he teleports out of his cape to start his boss fight in the remake. Originally, he discarded the cape with one hand.
    • A similar change of music was also present in regards to the leadup to the Wolf Sigma boss fight, partly due to the inclusion of a voiced cutscene before the battle. Originally, the second phase theme started playing as Sigma's head merged with the mech. In the remake, it played after the boss health bar filled up, with a lower mix of the Day of Sigma theme playing during the cutscene leading up to the boss battle instead.
    • In the original Mega Man X, Wolf Sigma has floating hands (likely due to animation limitations), while in Maverick Hunter X, Wolf Sigma has arms connected to his hands.
  • As a Maverick Hunter, Sigma is shown without spikes along his wrists or boots, and he also lacks the two wings on his back. Upon beginning his rebellion, he adds these villainous flourishes to his body. This is a detail only fully present in the Maverick Hunter X continuity.
  • Even though Sigma in this game got his scars from X in The Day of Sigma, the image of Sigma's face that appeared just before the battle against Wolf Sigma has him sporting similar injuries to the ones Zero inflicted upon him in the flashback from Mega Man X4.
