He took over a power station to secure an energy source for Sigma's forces and cut off power to the city. Because there was only light resistance, Mandrill leaves most of the fighting to his underlings, spending his time gorging himself on pure electricity, fresh from the generator.

As his name implies, he has an Electric weapon, known as Electric Spark. Mandrill's weakness is the Shotgun Ice; in fact, it can freeze Mandrill, forcing a repeat of his action cycle. This exploit makes Mandrill an infamously easy Maverick to defeat, as players can simply freeze him, wait, and repeat. This is known to many fans as "Spark Mandrill Syndrome", a nickname seemingly created by Jirard Khalil aka "The Completionist".

History
Design and movement patterns are different between the classic version and its PSP remake. In the classic version, Mandrill's attacks are much faster, such as his close-range punches, dash punches and Electric Spark moves. In Maverick Hunter X, however, most if not all of his moves are either executed at a slower pace (such as Electric Spark) or have him perform a charging move before executing them (dash punch and moving across the ceiling). His dash punches will have his knuckle transformed into a drill head before execution which has two levels, the latter being when he has less than half his health left.

For his Mega Man Maverick Hunter X incarnation, see Spark Mandrill/Maverick Hunter X.

Spark Mandrill, known in Japan as Spark Mandriller (スパーク・マンドリラー Supāku Mandorirā), is a mandrill-type Reploid from Mega Man X. He is a former Maverick Hunter who joined Sigma's rebellion.

Characteristics

Spark Mandrill is a large Reploid, being the second-tallest of the Maverick bosses in Mega Man X behind Flame Mammoth. His armor is mostly brown in color, and he has the face of a mandrill, complete with their signature blue snout. He has a hunchbacked posture, with giant shoulders and wrists decorated with colorful lights.

Spark Mandrill is a simple-minded soldier who is content to follow the orders of those in positions of power above him. He is also quite lazy, leaving most of the fighting to his underlings while he wastes time gorging himself on electricity.

History

Mega Man X

Spark Mandrill was a Maverick Hunter that served in the 17th Elite Unit, directly under Sigma's command alongside X and Zero. When Sigma starts his rebellion, Mandrill blindly follows his boss and joins him in the destruction, being labelled a Maverick for it.[3]

Spark Mandrill is ordered to take over a power station to secure an energy source for Sigma's forces and cut off power to cities. Because there is only light resistance, Mandrill leaves his Mechaniloid soldiers to hold the fort while he relaxes at the main generator. He is then confronted by X, who defeats him and takes his Electric Spark.[4]

Spark Mandrill later returned as part of the Maverick rematches in Sigma's Hideout, appearing in the third stage.

Mega Man Xtreme

A digital reconstruction of Spark Mandrill appeared in the Mother Computer as an obstacle to X in Normal Mode. He was also available for a rematch in Mega Man Xtreme 2's Boss Attack mode.

Strategy

Spark Mandrill deals heavy damage with his electricity and deceptively fast movement. He is good at covering the walls with his Electric Spark and climbing, and can even shake the player down with his punches. However, he is infamously weak to Shotgun Ice, which can totally immobilize him in a loop of breaking out of ice when timed correctly.

Spark Mandrill in the Mega Man TV show.

Spark Mandrill appeared with Vile in the "Mega X" episode from the Mega Man animated series. He only speaks three lines in the whole episode, so he doesn't get much personality. When he does speak, he uses a Russian accent. Like Vile, he's depicted as being more than a match for every robot in the present, with Mega Man being unable to even damage him. He was, however, no match for Mega Man X. Spark Mandrill was also shown to be able to paralyze both Mega Man and Roll.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)

Spark Mandrill has a brief cameo in issue #35, seen among Sigma's group of Maverick Hunters. He was later resurrected by Sigma using the power of the Genesis Portals and Unity Engines to become part of a massive army of Mavericks during Worlds Unite. After briefly facing Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, X and their allies, he and most of his comrades were dispatched to invade other worlds by Sigma.

Rockman X (manga)

Spark Mandrill also appears in the Rockman X manga, where he is the second Maverick fought by X. While he initially overwhelms X with his Electric Spark and sheer strength, he is startled when he is struck clean by Chill Penguin's Shotgun Ice. Realizing X was the reploid who would bring them into the future, Spark Mandrill immediately cowered, offering to surrender, mend his ways, and reveal Sigma's location. Before he could reveal anything, however, Sigma used a holographic machine to kill him after his defeat.

Irregular Hunter Rockman X

Spark Mandrill would be among those that joined Vile's Maverick rebellion alongside Chill Penguin, Launch Octopus, and Sting Chameleon. After Sting Chameleon's defeat, he overran a powerplant, causing several outages in Hunter Base. Sigma would order both X and Boomerang Kuwanger to defeat Spark Mandrill and retake the powerplant, but Boomerang Kuwanger uses X as a distraction to ambush Spark Mandrill. Despite this, it is revealed that Spark Mandrill had come prepared, and Chill Penguin would make the save, striking Boomer Kuwanger from behind.

When the two turn their attention towards X, they initially overpower him with their numbers, but X would begin positioning himself between their attacks, causing Mandrill and Penguin to hit each other. One of these would lead to Mandrill being fatally frozen by accident, and he is destroyed by X.

Rockman X Mega Mission 2

In the Carddass, Rockman X Mega Mission 2, he is revived as "Spark Mandriller L". He is now dark blue with black, red and yellow details, his shoulders have drills instead of lights, and he has spikes in the back of his hands, which seems to have joints to move forward.

Trivia

  • Spark Mandrill can be easily defeated with Shotgun Ice, as launching another shot after Spark Mandrill thaws will simply refreeze him, allowing him to be defeated without him doing a thing. This exploit makes Mandrill an infamously easy Maverick to defeat, as players can simply freeze him, wait, and repeat. This is known to many fans as "Spark Mandrill Syndrome", a term seemingly coined by Jirard Khalil aka "The Completionist".[5]
    • This does not apply to his appearance in Mega Man Xtreme and during the X Challenge as Spark Mandrill has invincibility frames when he thaws out, making him invulnerable to being frozen again until they wear off.
