Sting Chameleon, known in Japan as Sting Chameleao (スティング・カメリーオ, Sutingu Kamerīo), is a boss in Mega Man X, a Reploid based on the chameleon. He is a former Maverick Hunter who joined Sigma's uprising.

Characteristics

Sting Chameleon was a highly-skilled Maverick Hunter, but his sly, sneaky tricks and sharp tongue left him unpopular. Chameleon can blend into his surroundings and uses strategy to defeat his enemies by any means necessary; sometimes he is called a coward for such guerrilla tactics, but he doesn't care.^[3]

History

Mega Man X

Sting Chameleon was a skilled Maverick Hunter from the 9th Special Unit (Rangers), but he was never chosen for promotion to unit leader due to his unpopularity with his comrades. Never one to pass up an opportunity, Chameleon uses Sigma's Maverick rebellion as a means to rise through the ranks and gain more power and recognition in Sigma's Reploid nation.^[4] He is grimly protective of his post as defender of a front-line base in the jungle, where he fights X and is defeated, relinquishing his Chameleon Sting.

Sting Chameleon also reappeared in the third stage of Sigma's Hideout as part of the Maverick boss rush to face X once more.

Strategy

Sting Chameleon spends most of the battle hanging from the wall or ceiling, and can blend into his surroundings to near invisibility. He tries to catch the player off-guard with his stealth and misdirection, attacking from many different angles. This can make him difficult to target, but his movements can become predictable via observation. He is weak to Boomerang Cutter, which instantly pries him off the wall and can be used to lock him into a pattern.

	Sting Chameleon flicks his tail to launch a fan of three thorns. Usually performed three times consecutively.

	Tongue Flick Attack (舌をのばして攻擊, Shita o Nobashite Kōgeki)^[4] Iron Tongue^[5]
	Sting Chameleon extends his tongue to strike the player. He may do so standing on the floor or climbing on the backdrop.

	Transparent Movement (透明化移動, Tōmei-ka Idō)^[4]
	Sting Chameleon crawls along the backdrop while camouflaged, invulnerable to attacks. He reappears either in a corner to use Chameleon Sting, or near the player to use Iron Tongue.

	Thorn Rain (トゲの雨, Toge no Ame)^[4]
	Sting Chameleon jumps to hang from the ceiling by his tongue, shaking spikes to rain down in random patterns.

Sting Chameleon makes a cameo in Mega Man X6 in Metal Shark Player's Helper Attack. When he is resurrected, he attacks using Iron Tongue.
Sting Chameleon appeared in Street Fighter x All Capcom and TEPPEN.
Sting Chameleon was planned as a boss in the cancelled game Rockman Online.
In Mega Man X DiVE, Sting Chameleon is the boss from the Area Forest stage in Co-op mode. He also appears in some floors from the Jakob Orbital Elevator.
- He appeared as the boss of the second Monster Hunter Rise event. His data was mixed with the data from a Chameleos, becoming Chameleos Chameleon.

Rockman X (manga)

Sting Chameleon is the third Maverick that X fights in the Rockman X manga. He uses armed devices to control the animals of a forest, using them to cause havoc and call X's attention to capture him for Sigma. A city was already destroyed when X arrived at the forest. Zero meets X in the forest and says they need to burn the forest to stop the animals, but X urges him to find another way, by defeating the ones responsible for this and make the animals return to normal. Zero agreed, saying he has until sunset to do so or he will burn the forest. After passing by RT-55J and finding the Armor upgrade, X found Sting Chameleon training with a dummy. Chameleon uses the animals to attack X, but somehow they returned to normal and Chameleon had to fight X himself. During the fight, X's buster was damaged by his tongue, but X also damaged his tongue using the Electric Spark. X could not use his buster much because of this, but when it became dark, X fired his buster to cast light and reveal Chameleon's position. The sudden burst of light damaged Chameleon's camouflage system, allowing X to defeat him with a charged shot. Zero was already preparing a device to destroy the forest when X returned to him.

Rockman X Mega Mission

In the Carddass, Rockman X Mega Mission, Dr. Doppler used the Limited to revive Sting Chameleon as "Sting Chameleao L". Some of Sting Chameleon's changes include his green colors being changed to a dark blue, the four spikes pointed backwards of his head where replaced by two facing forward, different shoulders, and three spikes on his tail instead of two. He was defeated by Zero.

Mega Mission

In the Mega Mission manga history published in Rockman Remix and Rockman Maniax, Sting Chameleao L attacks X with Storm Eagleed L (Storm Eagle L) and Burnin' Noumander L (Flame Mammoth L). Initially, X doesn't want to fight them, but he's forced by iX/Limited to kill them with one blast, leaving only debris.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)

Sting Chameleon is briefly alluded to in the Worlds Collide arc, when Sonic the Hedgehog mockingly suggested to name Espio Man such (although he wasn't able to say the full name due to being cut off).

Sting Chameleon himself appeared in the sequel crossover Worlds Unite, in which Sigma resurrected him and other Mavericks using the power of the Genesis Portals and Unity Engines. Here Sting Chameleon resembled his Maverick Hunter X incarnation and invaded the world of Viewtiful Joe.

Trivia

Sting Chameleon, along with Boomer Kuwanger, are the only Mavericks from the first Mega Man X to not appear in the Mega Man Xtreme games.
His weapon, Chameleon Sting, is simply his English name with the words reversed.
In the Mega Man X Collection port, the sound effect of Sting Chameleon's Transparent Movement is slightly different. It is unclear if this change is intentional or a glitch.
Cameo Leon from Viewtiful Joe 2 may have been (at least loosely) based on Sting Chameleon.
- In Worlds Unite, Sting Chameleon invades the world of Viewtiful Joe, and Viewtiful Joe compares him to Cameo Leon.
