"I'll erase even the smallest trace of him from this world! And when I do that, no one will ever call me "his clone"!"
—χ -kai-, Mega Man X DiVE Event Stage "X-Hunters"

χ -kai-[1] (pronounced simply as "kai"), also reffered to as just χ or X-Kai by fans, is a prototype copy of the original X, introduced in the TruForce Collectibles' Designer Series as the leader of the X-Hunters. He made his video game debut as a playable character and boss in Mega Man X DiVE.

Characteristics[]

Since χ -kai- is a prototype based on the original Mega Man blueprints, he shares similarities in design with Mega Man X, although, his specifications were augmented to be even stronger than the original X.

His design, aesthetically, is similar to X's Ver.Ke design, but with different parts painted gold and black. The gem on his helmet is purple, his pupils are red and he has purple streaks running down from his eyes and extending down his cheeks. His soft armor is mostly grey with a few golden stripes, while his armor is mostly black, with gold details and orange lights. He features a Sigma symbol on his chest, with the caption "Counter Hunter" below it, and multiple Caution signs on various parts of his armor.

He has his own version of the X-Buster, being able to fire purple buster shots from it as well as an Armor Data Steal grab move which takes armor data from different armors X used. As a playable character, he utilizes the "Charge Shot -kai-" which allows him to store two charged shots, these projectiles can reverse the horizontal movements of whoever is hit. He also has an attack called "Multi-Chasing laser" which generates multiple projectiles from his body that can home in on enemies.

In Mega Man X DiVE event "X-Hunters", χ -kai- appears as the main antagonist and boss of the stage. He is shown to be prideful, but merciless. After being told by Serges that he was an X clone, he is obsessed with X, and percieves him as a dangerous foe. He actively seeks for X in hopes to kill him, and even willing to kill the player character in order to force X to face him. After being defeated, he eventually escapes, but hopes that he and X will clash again in the future. Despite this, he seems to have a sense of honor, as he hates the use of dirty tricks in battle.

History[]

Introduction on TruForce Package[]

His character was conceived as a prototype made by Dr. Wily from Mega Man’s stolen blueprints, but he was discarded and forgotten pretty quickly in favor of Zero, as he was far into development with him. He would be found a century later by Serges and was completed with state-of-the-art technology in the midst of the formation of the X-Hunters, making him more advanced than Mega Man X. χ -kai- was later assigned as leader of the X-Hunters.

Mega Man X DiVE[]

The origin of χ -kai- is slightly retconned, in where he is no longer a copy made from Mega Man's blueprints, but rather X's. In addition, Dr. Wily gave up on the project due to the difficulty that would come with creating a logic circuit for the prototype rather than discarding him in favor of Zero's development.

At a certain point, X is informed about the existence of a 4th X-Hunter and goes on searching for the said. The Player, RiCO and ViA eventually find χ -kai-, who states that Serges told him about his own origin in exchange for working for them. In doing this, he figured allying with the X-Hunters would eventually lead him to find X for the sole purpose of killing him, as he no longer wants to be known as "his clone". After χ -kai- is defeated, he reveals he has been dealing with pain and anguish for being created with the sole purpose of destroying X, having no identity to call his own.

Strategy[]

Mega Man X DiVE[]

χ -kai- fires three small purple buster shots and a large charge shot which can be dodged by simply wall jumping. χ -kai- will attempt multiple times to dash towards to the player to grab them and steal their armor data. If χ -kai- succeeds, he will gain access to different armor skills after each successful grab, as well as giving him an attack and defense buff. This grab can be dodged by simply air dashing over him. After χ -kai- succeeds in grabbing the player three times, further attempts will only make χ -kai- deal contact damage to the player without grabbing them. After the warning and boss details, he may sometimes fire buster shots or do his grab attack before the player regains control, so the player must be ready to dodge.

χ -kai- will use First Armor's "Headbutt" after the first grab, Second Armor's "Giga Crush" after the second grab and Third Armor's "Cross Charge Shot" after the third grab.

χ -kai- will use the Headbutt when close to the player and will attempt to hit them when airborne with it. When he uses the Giga Crush, the best option is just to flee as the hitbox does not cover the full screen, besides, when χ -kai- does the Giga Crush, he is invulnerable. He will use the Cross Charge Shot frequently when the player is far away, the pattern is simple enough to just wall jump over it when he does it.

When his health is in half, he will use Ultimate Armor's Armor Data and attack with "Plasma Charge Shot" and "Nova Strike", as well as grant him multiple attack and defense buffs which can't be canceled with buff removals from weapons or skills.

  • Buster Shot : χ -kai- fires three small purple shots and a charged shot afterwards.
  • Armor Data Steal : χ -kai- will dash along the ground, attempting a grab attack, χ -kai- will be able to use numerous attacks after each successful grab.
    • Headbutt : χ -kai- will attack by jumping upwards while surrounded by a purple aura.
    • Giga Crush : χ -kai- will jump and extend both arms and legs and a red explosion will happen on the screen. While performing this attack as a Raid Boss, χ -kai will be invincible.
    • Cross Charge Shot : χ -kai- will fire two buster shots in rapid succession, splitting into five shots.
  • Dash : χ -kai- will dash along the ground, dealing contact damage.
  • Plasma Charge Shot : χ -kai- will charge and fire a large purple charged shot, leaving behind a damaging Plasma Ball when it makes contact.
  • Nova Strike : χ -kai- will do a powerful flying tackle while surrounded by red energy.

Creation Notes[]

This character was designed by Keisuke Mizuno, and his figure was made by TruForce Collectibles exclusively for the New York Comic Con 2015 as a special variant of Mega Man X. The concept behind his creation was that there were originally four members in X-Hunters, but the fourth character was cut from the game due to ROM capacity.[2] Mizumo stated that χ -kai- was created because he was "amazed that Capcom didn't make a villain that looked exactly like Mega Man X."

Etymology[]

  • χ (upper case: Χ) is the 22nd letter of the Greek alphabet. The letter is transcribed as "Khi" or "Chi" but pronounced as "kai" in English.
    • Additionally, "kai" can be transcribed into "" in Japanese, which means "change", "modification", "revised" or "refined" (in case of machines).
    • The Greek letter χ derived into the Latin alphabet X (pronounced as "ex" in English), whose pronunciation was derived from Ξ (ksi), another Greek alphabet.

Trivia[]

  • Contrary to Mizuno's statement about there not being a villain that looked exactly like X, there were two copies of X in the franchise before χ -kai-: iX from the Rockman X Carddass series and Copy X from the Mega Man Zero series.
  • Originally, the 4th member of the X-Hunters was going to be a female, however, due to the limitations of the SNES cartridge space, this fourth member was discarded, alongside Violen's second form.[2]
  • It is widely believed that the mysterious man who finished χ -kai- was Serges, as he was shown to be knowledgeable of X's past as well as being able to build a new body for Zero so complex that, as it is pointed out in later games, his body was still unanalyzable.
    • In Mega Man X DiVE, it is confirmed that Serges is the one who completed χ -kai-.
  • χ -kai-'s origins have many similarities to Rockman Shadow in that they are both copies of Mega Man who were discarded by Dr. Wily but were eventually completed and outfitted with better technology than their original counterpart, and came to lead a group of powerful robots against them. The difference ultimately being that Rockman Shadow completed and upgraded himself, while χ -kai- was completed by another person or robot.
  • The Armor Data Steal grab χ -kai- uses works in similar fashion to how Mega Man acquires different special weapons on the Ruby-Spears cartoon.
  • Kai shares some similarities with Bass and Daini as in designs based off the originals, color schemes, and their rivalry with Mega Men.
