"Bumo... Bumomomo! Bumomo Bumomomomo Bumo!"
―Yellow Devil, Mega Man Powered Up

Yellow Devil (イエローデビル Ierō Debiru), also known as Rock Monster[1] or Yellow Demon, is a gigantic robot, the first combat robot created by Doctor Albert W. Wily. It made its debut as a fortress boss in the first Mega Man game. Its body consists of yellow goo-like shape-memory parts that can dismantle and fly across the screen to attack its enemies manipulated by its core, the eye in the center. Its only weak point is its red eye.

This gelatinous giant is the boss of Wily Stage 1, and is the first fortress boss in the series.

Attack Pattern[]

The Yellow Devil can be difficult to hold your ground against due to its long attack pattern, being able to split into 19 parts that move in a set pattern. The fight starts off by these parts coming into view from the left side of the screen and assembling Yellow Devil on the right side. Once formed, Yellow Devil will open his red eye at a random elevation (the highest one being out of the buster's reach) and fire an extremely fast shot at the player's position. This red eye is the boss's weak point, and the player can only get one hit in before the eye disappears. After the eye attacks, Yellow Devil will repeat the pattern of splitting apart, and form on the other side of the arena. The player can only be hit by the 2 lowest part elevations if standing still, which is key info in dodging the moving parts. Here is the pattern:

Weakness[]

Yellow Devil's weakness is Thunder Beam, which is the easiest weapon to hit the boss's eye and will kill him in 7 hits. Yellow Devil also takes 2 damage from the Mega Buster, Rolling Cutter, and Fire Storm.

Mega Man Powered Up[]

In the remake of the original game, it is revealed that the Yellow Devil can talk, but the only thing it can say is "Bumo", which it says in various ways in order to form its own language. Cut Man attempts to speak to it, but without much success as it only seemed to insult the monster. Ice Man appears to understand what the Yellow Devil is saying, however, and says that even though the Yellow Devil has a mission, he has his own mission, too. Oil Man just mockingly copies its "bumo"s. Bomb Man doesn't understand what it says and tells it to speak in a "language that can be understood".

Its attack pattern in New Style is different from the original. In Easy, it will just stand in one place and reveal its eye to shoot energy spheres. In Normal, Hard and Old Style, it uses its splitting attack like the original game, but in 15 parts with a different pattern for each difficulty but it is fixed for each of their respective fight:

  • In Old Style, the player must jump over the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 10th and 14th fragments.
  • In Normal, the player must jump over the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 12th and 15th fragments.
  • In Hard, the player must jump over the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th fragments.

This splitting attack now has a different visual animation in Powered Up compared to the original game where it generates a swirling vortex covering the area where its fragments are at, before flying to the other side where it forms another swirling vortex of its fragments. When playing as Guts Man, the vortexes as well as the Yellow Devil fragments will destroy Guts Blocks in their path that were placed by the player. Once all of the fragments travel to the other side, the Yellow Devil reform itself. Touching either vortex will damage the player.

In Old Style, the player is given the opportunity to hit Yellow Devil as it uses its energy sphere attack before it undergoes its splitting attack at the start of the battle whereas in Normal and Hard, the Yellow Devil immediately use its splitting attack upon commencing the fight. In Hard, instead of firing energy spheres, Yellow Devil fires a laser beam at the player either from the ground or the wall. To avoid the ground laser, the player has to stand near the wall and jump at the correct time. To dodge the wall laser, the player just has to move themselves near Yellow Devil. While the Yellow Devil is firing its laser, it is invulnerable and the player can only damage Yellow Devil once it finishes its attack. In New Style, if the player stands near the Yellow Devil, it will sometimes try to crush the player with its hand instead of using its ranged attack.

While the player can usually only damage the Yellow Devil once per attack cycle, it is possible to hit it twice instead in Easy, Normal and Old Style should it use its energy sphere attack although it requires very strict timing to pull off. It is weak to the Fire Storm but the player won't be able to attack the Yellow Devil twice per cycle if used as the first attack this way.

Mega Man: The Power Battle[]

Yellow Devil appears as the penultimate boss of the "Mega Man 1~2" and "Mega Man 3~6" courses. In the "Mega Man 1~2" course, it jumps back and forth and sometimes takes on a round form and attack with a laser. It also attacks by splitting into nine parts that fly across the room, throwing a cube-shaped part of its body that bounces across the room, slamming enemies with its hand to pull the target into its body and launch them at high speed, and blasting its upper body into four fists diagonally to punch foes. Its weakness is the Super Arm.

In the "Mega Man 3~6" course, the Devil only jumps back and forth. After taking a small amount of damage, the Yellow Devil splits into three smaller versions of itself with horns. One of the miniatures will stay the ground, jumping around and firing three small projectiles or splitting in three parts. The other two miniatures will walk around the ceiling and attack by releasing three large energy spheres. After the small version in the ground takes some damage, it will jump to the ceiling and change places with the other miniatures. After all three receive enough damage, the Yellow Devil will reform and jump around the room. It is weak to Gyro Attack.

In this game, it is revealed that its eye is actually a levitating black sphere with a red light at its center. This core becomes exposed once the Yellow Devil is hit with a powerful attack while standing still, briefly stunning it before it reforms itself.

Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters[]

Yellow Devil is the penultimate boss of "Rescue Roll!" course. Its attack pattern is similar to the "Mega Man 1~2" course from The Power Battle, except that its splitting attack changed and the four-way fist blast was removed. It can walk and defend against attacks in this game. It is weak to Thunder Beam.

Mega Man: Battle & Chase[]

Yellow Devil is one of three enemy racers (the others being a 4 Roader and Joe), forcing itself inside a blue vehicle to be able to race. The heavyweight vehicle has no weapons, but its rams are powerful. There is also a secret boss recolor of him called Black Yellow Devil.

Other appearances[]

  • Yellow Devil has a cameo appearance in the opening cutscene of Mega Man 8.
  • The Yellow Devil was shown in the first trailer of Rockman Online, but the game's cancellation as well as lack of footage featuring it makes it impossible to determine where it was intended to appear and what role he was supposed to play.
  • Yellow Devil could be obtained in an event from Yuusha no Kuse ni Konamaiki da DASH!, where it is said to be made of liquid metal.
  • The Yellow Devil was added to Mega Man X DiVE as the boss of Chapter 14-6. Its description states that the shape-memory alloy used to make it up was originally created by Dr. Light but was stolen by Wily. Adding to this, its eye is also a control chip that acts as its chief control component that can allow it to taken on its humanoid form, but its programming is not advanced enough to allow it to move. It is also accompanied by a screenshot of the original game's boss fight.

The Yellow Devil appears as the main stage hazard in the Wily Castle stage from the Super Smash Bros. franchise, being deployed from the castle itself in the background. It behaves and fights similarly to its 8-bit counterpart, firing multiple blasts of energy from its single eye and splitting up into 20 parts to reform on the other side. Its pattern is the same as in Mega Man, but with one extra part between the 6th and 7th part, which is actually the empty space between the legs. Players can choose to fight it by attacking the exposed eye, its only weak spot. If defeated, the Yellow Devil will release a highly damaging explosion, which will count as an attack for the player who dealt the final blow.

Trivia[]

  • The Yellow Devil has two entrance animations in Mega Man Powered Up; the first one where its parts arrive from the left side of the screen and is used in the main game while the second one where it simply descends from above as a giant yellow ball is used in the Boss Challenges.

Mega Man (Archie Comics)[]

The Yellow Devil appears in the first issue when Mega Man is entering Wily's fortress. However, during the fight, the scene cuts to the (chronological) start of the story. The battle's conclusion is shown in the fourth issue. Mega Man destroys the Devil with the Mega Buster as he doesn't want to use the weapons copied from the Robot Masters.

Despite its defeat, the concept of Yellow Devil would inspire further evil creations, including the Chaos Devil and the Ra Devil. The former was created by combining Yellow Devil technology with the creature Chaos in a cooperative effort between Wily and Dr. Eggman, Chaos being a native of Eggman's world. The Ra Devil was created as an improvement upon Wily's design by Ra Moon, who sought to turn Wily's own work against him as the doctor had attempted to do by creating Ra Thor. Mega Man later faced an improved version when attacking Dr. Wily's newest castle.

Short Circuits[]

Prior to the Worlds Collide crossover event, Yellow Devil did not make an appearance in the Short Circuits series. During the crossover, however, it did appear in one of the Off Panel strips of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, in which it is seen talking to Tikal the Echidna, who attempts to convince it that violence is not the answer to its problems. It later returned in Worlds Unite in Sonic Universe #77's Off Panel strip, crammed in with various characters from Sonic the Hedgehog/Sonic Universe, Sonic Boom, Mega Man, and Mega Man X.

Mega Man Megamix[]

Yellow Devil is the large robot who stands guard within the main control room of Wily's fortress. Its body parts are composed of an organic ferromagnetic polymer gel, and each part is controlled by a nucleus-like core. Changes in the magnetic field allow it to take on the distinctive Yellow Devil form. What appears to be its eye is the main core that controls its entire body. Wily believed Yellow Devil to be his greatest creation ever, but due to the fact that Yellow Devil's core could be disrupted by a strong electromagnetic pulse, the Thunder Beam proved to be the creature's ultimate weakness. All the Yellow Devil can say is the letter "W".

After the defeat of Doctor Thomas Light's six Robot Masters in the story "The Birth of Mega Man", Yellow Devil holds Mega Man hostage as he meets Dr. Wily. Wily tries to convince Mega Man to join him, but as he refuses, he orders Yellow Devil to crush him. Mega Man manages to escape Yellow Devil's grip by using Guts Man's strength, breaking its arm, and then finish it off with a Thunder Beam.

Trivia[]

  • A glitch in the original release of the first game allows the player to quickly defeat Yellow Devil by shooting it with the Thunder Beam and repeatedly tapping the pause button when it makes contact. Every time pause is toggled it will register a hit. This actually works with any boss, and even the player, as it really is just the invincibility counter still expiring while the game is paused. A similar glitch can be performed to dodge Boobeam Trap's attack with the weapon select menu in Mega Man 2.
  • Yellow Devil's name was changed to "Rock Monster" in most early English sources due to a policy Nintendo had against religious references in NES games at the time.
  • Artist Ryan Jampole of the Archie Comics featured a modified Yellow Devil in part of a series of Halloween costumes drawn for Roll, in which the Yellow Devil appeared as the Big Daddy to Roll's Little Sister from Bioshock.[2]
  • The Yellow Devil appears with several other characters on the cover of Mega Man #50 despite not making an appearance in Worlds Unite.
  • The Yellow Devil is counted as a shielded enemy when it is gathering its individual segments together, but only in Mega Man Powered Up.
  • The Yellow Devil is called a male in the British localization of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U ("Hit his eye enough and he will explode.").
